Please check out Fred Hammond or anything he touches as a writer/producer. His music is so uplifting, real and personal and straight from the word of God. And if you have the opportunity to see him live... oh my goodness!!!

His latest project is called, "Somethin' 'Bout Love," and it's incredible.

Absolutely.
Shirley Caesar, Mahalia Jackson, and up to the Winans and Commissioned is about it for me. Most newer music is trying too hard to be secular.

Tramaine Hawkins' Goin' Up Yonder is one of the greatest gospel recordings ever.

And you cannot go wrong with Mahalia Jackson. She's considered the best for good reason. Her voice is moving, and I love Trouble of the World (the funeral scene in Imitation of Life where she sings it is so sad sad)! There's a 2-disc set of her recordings through Columbia/Legacy, Gospels, Spirituals & Hymns, that is a good starting place.

I think everybody has covered many of the greats of gospel. I'm biased and prefer that old school gospel style over what gets the teen choirs jumpin' and rockin.' I recently bought Mahalia Jackson's greatest hits, and a 3-cd set of Walter Hawkins and Love Alive.

I only go as far as the winans which i suppose is pop/gospel if u had to classify it!

Bebe and cece winans "Different lifestyles" album got me through some hard times! "Cant take this away" "Addicted love" "The blood" (with mc hammer) "Depend on u" "Different lifestyles".....all great uplifting and funky songs!

"Th return" by the winans is ok! "Everyday the same" (with stevie wonder) "A friend"...both great tracks!

The stuff I would have mentioned has already been brought up, except: Rev. James Cleveland (I swear his choir and band SMOKED!) and also Andre Crouch.

Aside from them I'm partial to Walter and Tramaine Hawkins, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, Shirley Caesar, Mahalia Jackson and some stuff that I'd have to go to my mother's and find - she has a stash of '60s, '70s, early '80s Gospel vinyl albums that are off the charts. Some of it I recently recorded for myself. There's a lot of names that I'm not remembering right now.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

In an early thread i'd mentioned the 1st voice that struck me emotionally was Mahalia Jackson's.
My grandmother was a Protestant Bishop (with churches in Harlem and Wash D.C.) and pretty much raised me till I was school age (both my parents worked full-time).
A quick sidebar - because of this situation, I was able to accompany her to the great March On Washington in '63.

Every Sunday she would get up early and make the best breakfasts i've ever had to this day. Thinking about this now, I believe this was her failsafe method of making sure everyone would get up, eat breakfast and then have no excuse for not being ready for church. While she was cooking and during breakfast I always remember one of the 2 following records always being played.

The World's Greatest Gospel Singer is available at CDUniverse with the original tracklist and a different cover.

The World's Greatest Gospel Singer
I'm Going To Live The Life I Sing About In My Song
When I Wake Up In Glory
Jesus Met The Woman At The Well
Oh Lord Is It I?
I Will Move On Up A Little Higher
When The Saints Go Marching In
Jesus
Out Of The Depths
Walk Over God's Heaven
Keep Your Hand On The Plow
Didn't It Rain

Many of her original Apollo recordings were re-released on Columbia.
These original songs featured very a basic rhythm section. Piano, organ, some guitar and light drums. This woman's voice is so powerful and full of emotion, she could do these songs a cappella and still be as effective. She's the only instrument necessary, she's that good.

If you're serious, I implore you to make this one of your acquisitions.
You will not regret it. If you have no other gospel singer but her, you'll be well served.
If you get a compilation, make sure it has the above songs along with:

In The Upper Room
Walk In Jerusalem
His Eye Is On The Sparrow
There Is A Balm In Gilead
How I Got Over
He's Got The Whole World In His Hands
Joshua Fit The Battle Of Jericho
Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child
Take My Hand, Precious Lord
When The Saints Go Marching In
Down By The Riverside
I've Been Buked

Others I would suggest include:
The Swanee Quintet
The Sensational Nightingales
Dixie Hummingbirds
The Swan Silvertones
Rev. James Cleveland
Shirley Caesar
Sister Rosetta Tharpe
Mighty Clouds of Joy
The Five Blind Boys
The Ward Singers
Albertina Walker

Not really that hip on the more modern performers.
However I have been quite surprised by certain things i've heard on BET's Bobby Jones Gospel.

soulsike

I'm gonna suggest a few more contemporary, since everyone else has the old school covered.

Yolanda Adams (get here Live in Washington album and live dvd first, then get Mountain High, Valley Low. Yolanda has, to me, the best voice in music today. Bold, full, and range, but I've never heard her voice crack or strain EVER. It helps that she is absolutely gorgeous, but that's just sugar to help the medicine....)
Lisa McClendon (neo soul gospel--good stuff)
Mary mary - 1st album
Men of Standard (can rival the best male R&b group out there. Better vocals, better range and quality of content, these guys should do an album on a major, just to get people hep...)
Deitrick Haddon and Danita
YVETTE WILLIAMS!!!!! Tonex's wife. No cd out yet, but just wait. she might be going for Yolanda's crown...
New Direction (fun gospel R&B)
Nicole Mullen (more contemporary Christian than gospel, but she is really talented, very good songs, good melodies)

There've been some good ones mentioned already and some that I think suck. But, lord have mercy, no one has mentioned Richard Smallwood!! disbelief He's the Thomas Dorsey of this generation. Every Sunday millions of churches are singing his songs "Total Praise", "I Love The Lord", "Jesus, You're The Center Of My Joy", "Psalm 8", "I Will Sing Praises", "My Everything (Praise Waiteth)", etc. To his peers in the game he's the "Mozart of Gospel" because of his haunting harmonies and his skills at the piano.

My wife and I had the pleasure of performing with him two years ago. He's so cool...sat there for like two hours singing approx. 2,000 autographs at the end of the show.

Check him out! nod

Whoo-hoo! Talkin' about gettin the SPIRIT! The Hawkins family always had the BOMB choir arrangements and the most beautiful voices. Not all that yellin' like some choirs do today.
