Good question. I think the fewer electronic instruments, the less dated it sounds.
Most Tom Waits records. I'll say Small Change. Elvis Costello--King of America Much of Abbey Road (maybe not "Because") Bob Dylan--Blood on the Tracks Beck said that's exactly what he was going for with "Mutations". We'll see if it's true. Could say Parade or Lovesexy, since they sound nothing like anything that came out at the same time. Check this song out at:

10,000 maniacs - In my Tribe
The Smiths - The Queen is Dead Ministry - A Mind is a Terrible thing to Taste Tracy Chapman - Cross Roads ANything by Prince between ATWIAD and LoveSexy And the next one is a little confusing: New Order - Substance The reason why I say this it it obviously an 80's synth abulm, but the songs sound as fresh today as they did back then.

Even though "Sign O' The Times" was released in the 1980s, when I listen to it, I envision the 1960s. On the other hand, I do see your point. If I were just now being exposed to music of any kind for the very first time and heard "Sign O' The Times", I would immediately say it must have been released in the 1960s. Of course, I would be wrong but that album would fool you. To me, some of Sade's stuff like "Turn My Back On You" and "Is It A Crime" sounds like the 1970s, even though it was released in the 1980s. Lenny Kravitz's music also has a 1960s and 1970s feel to it and it was released in the 1990s. There were a few bands in the 1990s (I can't think of their names) that had kind of a retro 1970s sound also. Most of Prince's stuff released after 1985 to the present has a retro sound to it. Some of D'Angelo's slow stuff sounds like the 1970s. A lot of the artists in this day and time go back and try to recreate the sound from another decade. I can't say I blame them. Look what else they have to compete with on the radio these days. I can't really think of one album that I can listen to and not place an era that it sounds like, whether it came out in that era or not. I can't think of one that really stands alone and not sounds like anything else out there from any era. Andy is a four letter word.

Exactly. That's why so much music from the mid-to-late 80s sounds so dated to me.Alot of that music was synthesizer-based,with drum machines and other electronic gimmicks.Alot of those songs sound like it was created by robots instead of musicians, lol. For the most part,Prince avoided this, which is why albums like 'Sign O The Times' and 'Parade' don't sound the least bit dated to me.

There's another side to this which is.... if there aren't any electronic elements... it sure sounds like it is pre-80s, which is dated. Which is exactly what some of these bands TRY to do.
I second AsianBomb's motion for The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead.

Although, I wouldn't go so far to say that it doesn't sound "dated". It definitely has a unique 70s sound. Not that that's a bad thing. Neither is Pink Floyd for that matter edit [This message was edited Thu Aug 26 4:33:03 2004 by minneapolisgenius] "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

Not that the songwriting isn't awesome, and ingenious use of tape loops, orchestras etc etc. But that shit sounds old! I really think The Queen Is Dead could have been released yesterday, and you wouldn't know. Just think about how the White Album outtakes on the Anthology 3 sounded old, even though they were new to you. Maybe you still disagree..

The majority of music that I listen to is from the late 60s and into the 70s, so obviously that's my favorite "sound". Also, I think dated can be a good thing, because the direction the majority of modern music is going, it makes me not even want to listen to anything that sounds "new" or really "now". Give me music from the past any day. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

Give me music from the past any day. Tru dat. Lots of today's "new" music is lame as hell. No life in it whatsoever. The sad thing is, it makes me feel old to say that. Like, now I sound like my uncle. But it's not all of today's music, it's just what is promoted and marketed in your face so you'll hop on the next trend (that will sound dated in 10 years...) Personally, when people talk about music sounding dated, that gets on my nerves. At some point it's just about trends and not about music. Like, if you're worried so much about something sounding dated you're not listening to the composition. Obviously there are certain sounds that dominate certain years and then they are never used again by anyone with any sense in their head. At work I call this company and their hold music is sooooo 90's... It sounds like MJ's "The Way You Make Me Feel". I can't explain the sound but if you heard it you would know what I meant. The rhythm of the song and the sounds used are sooo similar, it's like they were really trying to imitate that song. Kinda puts a damper on my work day.

The albums is still going strong after 13 years. HIStory is nice too but there's still time to decide on that one. Anyway, I think Pink Floyd's The Wall is timeless. When I listen to it from beginning to end, takes u on a journey. Sounds invincible on remastered cd.

The thing is, I'll be the first one to admit that I'm sure there is some great new music being made out there somewhere today, but I just can't be bothered to search for it right now. And that's what you have to do to find it: search through loads of crap to find something that might really be great. At the moment, I am busy enough getting into artists and bands that came way before my time. There is so much out there that I haven't even heard yet, and it's very time consuming. I often find myself thinking, after I've discovered "new" old music, "How the hell did I go through life so far without ever hearing this yet?!"
