Dancing Queen/Abba Can this perhaps be one of the best pop songs? Not just disco, this has so many ingredients that makes it special. From the piano slide the opens the song (very similar to "I Want You Back" from the Jackson Five) to the great music, (that hi-hat), great lyrics and great vocals, this song is the epitome of everything that was great about the 70's. Not just kids, but grown people believing that dreams can come true, beautiful girls with big blown dry hair and strawberry flavored lip gloss and making out for 6 hours! This song is special. Anyone out there in space digs this song as well? SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

You got a little sugar in your tank - dontcha? Why, cuz I like beautiful girls with big blown dry hair and making out with them for 6 hours? What in the hell is wrong with that? Or believing that dreams come true? If u don't, I feel sorry for ya. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Plus, it's really weird because I just heard two REALLY bad versions of this song right before you posted this thread. The first one was this live, outdoor concert in Amsterdam that was broadcast on TV here in Holland. It was the cast from the Dutch "Mama Mia" show, and they sang it in Dutch which was horrendous.
Then, I was just played a version by Bono at some U2 concert as a joke. Again, horrendous. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

Didn't this song become some sort of trademark for draq queens? I don't know, I just had this impression...
Anyway, I never lived the 70s and never got the ideology of that era but I do think they were an exceptional pop band. "Dancing Queen" along with "Mamma Mia", "S.O.S", "Money, Money, Money", "The Winner Takes It All" and of course "Waterloo" were just great pop songs. I enjoy their music and fully admit it. At least they wrote, composed, played and produced mainly all their tracks themselves. (Well, mainly B&B, the dudes did.) Hate or laugh as much as you want, but ABBA rocked.

I don't know a single solitary soul that doesn't like this one {here comes somebody to tell me differently now }. "Dancing Queen" is the mother of ALL Abba songs, period! Its strengths: the whole arrangement, catchy hooks, and is produced brilliantly. It's just a fun record. Even a lot of people who detest all things of the disco era love this one.
Those strings: That piano: That common feature in music of the disco era: the swish, swish, swish of the high hat Anyone who doesn't like this one is a stick in the mud. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Why did this group turn down millions to reunite...I believe it was only for one show for the fans and they said "no way". I remember hearing about this a few years ago....as far as the song, I've never really listened to it (not my type of music) but I seem to know the chorus as they (media) have shoved it down our throats by having it play it in commercials, movies, cd compilation infomercials etc. See that girl, watch that scene..... Ohhh you keep saying stay the niiiiiiiiight

Well, when I wrote the thread, I felt I was going to get some bullshit ass comments, but I didn't give a fuck, cuz I know the song is killing. And I know they're a grip of people who have always liked the song, but wouldn't want to cop to it, cuz of some silly shit. Your comment though is my sentiment as well. Been an ABBA fan ever since I listened/saw Waterloo as a kid back in 1974. Dancing Queen is one of their best songs but altogether I find they only crafted perfect pop songs from the beginning (or at least since 1975)till their last album in 1981/2. So Manki has an ABBA connection... How interesting .

What was their reason for turning it down? Was it a one night only show - was it an album - was it a tour - I don't know of any sane person that would turn down that kind of money for something as simple as making music or performing one last time for the fans...Did they have a falling out in their prime...what's the deal with this group?? Ohhh you keep saying stay the niiiiiiiiight

I don't know of any sane person that would turn down that kind of money They needed not the money. That's it. Hey, they are Swedish, not american. Contrary to popular belief, there are people that won't sell their souls for money. They've gone separate ways. Oh, they're still friends and in case you didn't know, they are 2 divorced couples.

Selling your soul is one thing but reuniting to perform songs you created/recorded years ago and made money off of is another. Same songs/new day/ton of money....I don't consider that selling their souls, I consider it a once in a lifetime opportunity but hey, if they have money and are happy with a decision they won't regret later, more power to them. I for one have limits just as well as the next person...I would'nt do anything stupid to get that type of money...it would have to be within reason. Ohhh you keep saying stay the niiiiiiiiight

I'm pretty sure it was an entire tour. The thing about ABBA was that they consisted of two married couples who eventually divorced while the group was still together, and that can only strain things professionally. I don't remember the reason given, but I remember thinking that maybe their relationships with their ex-spouses were just past the point of no return to even give it a chance - but hey, they were offered something like 700 or 800 million dollars, if memory serves me. Most people would put up with that type of strain, tho it was obviously unimportant to them. As successful as they were in America, they were even more successful in Europe and Australia, so maybe a good case could be made that they didn't really need the money. Remember the song "There's Something Going On" by Frida? She was 1/4 of ABBA, Phil Collins produced her debut solo album with that song. This post not for the wimp contingent. I stand corrected. It was NOT the paltry sum of 700-800 million dollars, it was a BILLION they were offered. Check it out:
http://www.thewavemag.com...leid=24850 Take a Billion Dollar Chance on Me
Then, along comes ABBA to confound everyone. Four years ago, a German entertainment company offered the Swedish super-group one billion dollars to reunite for a world tour. Yes, that’s right: $1,000,000,000. “It’s never going to happen,” ABBA guitarist Bjorn Ulvaeus told them. Now, this begs the question: At an asking price of $1 billion, is ABBA being greedy by turning down that kind of cash? Seriously, we’re not talking about typical reunion money here – the kind that might buy Sammy Hagar one more beach house in Cabo. We’re talking about a BILLION dollars. That’s change-the-world kind of money. If the members of ABBA are financially set for life, then we hold the position that it’s totally selfish of them not to earn one billion dollars and do something constructive with it, such as feed half of Africa. Do you know how much medicine one billion dollars could buy for needy people all over the globe? At the very least, with that kind of money, you could pay Sammy Hagar to never play music again! http://www.musicinsight.c.../02/21.htm ABBA: Won't Do Reunion Tour
Not even for a billion dollars. Really. Reuters (and every other entertainment news outlet, it seems) is reporting that ABBA has turned down a proposed concert reunion tour that would have had them play 100 concerts for a cool 1 billion dollars. Yes, billion. They just aren't interested. The band still sells extremely well, and covers of "Mamma Mia" and "Gimme Gimme" have done very well on the European charts. A musical featuring ABBA tunes is packing them in in London's West End theatre district. All this popularity had a consortium of British and American firms reaching for their wallets,. but former Abba member Benny Andersson said "It is a hell of a lot of money to say no to, but we decided it wasn't for us". They must really not want to work together. / [This message was edited Fri Aug 27 21:27:08 2004 by Supernova] This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.
