Lifetime pass

Michael Jackson

Straddling the line (pop friendly, but can still put out the hard r&b shit, too!)

PRINCE
Janet Jackson
Luther Vandross
Natalie Cole
Whitney Houston

Pass revoked

Public Enemy (man..used to be all over MTV, then poof!)
Jill Scott (Grammys with those Blue Men --then poof!)

Lifetime pass

Donna Summer (she almost lost her "gay pass" though with that "Divine Ruling" controversy)
Lenny Kravitz
Darius Rucker (aka Hootie)
Michael Jackson
Diana Ross
RuPaul
Bobby McFerrin
Deniece Williams
Pointer Sisters
The Weather Girls
...any (fat) black woman singing with a gospel-styled voice on house tracks!
...any rapper rhyming about hoes, money and killing!

Straddling the line (pop friendly, but can still put out the hard r&b shit, too!)

The Roots
Beyonce (and Destiny's Child)
Prince
Janet
Whitney

Pass revoked

Lauryn Hill (all those "she's a racist" rumors)

But you could argue that any black artist that crossed over to MTV has "the white pass."

I think Erykah Badu's name is FIRMLY implanted on the pass revoked list. White pop audiences loved her voice when she came out because she reminded them of Billie Holiday, but when they finally got around to listening to the LYRICS of "On & On", it was like "Hey, wait a minute.....she's dissin' us!"
-----pass revoked.

Including posthumous passes, I would include on that list:

Lifetime pass

Miles Davis (for his icon status, many are unfamiliar with a lot of his work)

Bob Marley (even tho his lyrics make Dead Prez sound like Kid N' Play, whites still revere him)

Revocable pass

as said previously, any rapper charting these days

Seal (moving for a lifetime pass)

If they loved her becoz she reminded them of Lady Day, then they should've paid mo' attention to the latter too cool

Lady Day had her share of dissing white folks("Ofays" as she used to call 'em) in her music AND in public lol lol lol

Not trying to stir up any controversy, but would you say that any black artist that is "conscious" automatically has their "White Pass" revoked?

biggrin I've heard the former, not the latter. It is actually much less watered down for her. The first and last time I actually liked a Whitney Houston song was when "You Give Good Love" was released. Since then, I echo Nelson George's sentiments: dead

I don't think so. Consider the example of Public Enemy. During their late '80s and early '90s commercial heyday there were plenty of Whites who bought their albums and showed up at their gigs. PE had a very diverse following in general. But it could be said that they're the exception as opposed to the rule.

Now, THERE's a word I haven't heard in a while!

Anybody mention Will Smith???
I think you can say that both he and Whitney got their passes upgraded to Platinum status when they began starring in movies. wink

That was more a issue of families and prudes, not race. She's still gets played on mainstream/pop radio. "All Nite (Don't Stop)" can attest to that. MTV may be acting shady to her right now, but that's a-whole-'nother issue.

Did you see their "Behind The Music" on VH1? They were accused of being anti-Semitic and were flamed in the early '90s. That's partially why you don't see their old videos on TV as much (unless it's on BET).

Well, at any rate, if the SB hadn't happened, All Nite (Don't Stop) would probably have gone Top 10 this summer. It didn't even chart.

I know, and that is so sad. IMHO, it was one of the best dance songs of the year. At least it went #1 on Billboard's Dance/Club Play charts.

Yep, that was after Professor Griff's comments back then. I can't remember his words verbatim at this point tho. But PE's music even before his comments weren't exactly of the PC "we're all the same" crowd in the first place.

I don't necessarily know that that's why their old videos don't show up on tv, how often are other hip hop group's (who don't champion Black consciousness) old videos on tv? In the aftermath of Griff's comments mtv still showed their videos for a while, including one protesting Arizona's disregard for MLK's birthday ("By The Time I Get To Arizona"). I just think that it's not fashionable for Black consciousness in hip hop today - on video stations in general. Unfortunately, due to the music marketing zeitgeist consciousness in the mainstream became a fad.

I like the rock acts:

Living Colour
Bad Brains
Fishbone
24-7 Spyz
Jean Beauvoir

...and a special nod to Brooklyn band Candiria. Only the vocalist is black, but they mix hardcore with jazz to achieve something special.

Let's at the Bus Boys, too!

But, do they get the "black pass?"

That's a good point. A lot of the rock acts have almost no black following whatsoever.
