Hark! I can just hear No Father Figure and Jesus Top A Child blasting from a sound system in the ghetto slums of Harlem. 'The Black Pass'? Get real, my friend. How about 'The White Pass'? Burn every Living Colour and solo Lionel Ritchie record then throw yourself on top of this plastic pyre. . [This message was edited Fri Aug 20 7:16:21 2004 by Number23]

Hall and Oates? They get/got generous airplay on R&B radio? I don't know where I was when this was happening, but this is news to me. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

Man...to me Stevie is the black Paul McCartney. Most of his later music sounds like a karaoke backing tape. Sir Duke is great though. But Saturn....let's just say I hope they didn't send that one up with Voyager 2. Sorry about being so nasty before. My hair's not sitting right.

Sara Smile, Rich Girl , She's Gone..Your Imagination..and theri biggest R&B hit probably..I Can't Gor For That (No Can Do)...hell, they rocked Soul Train back in the day...now that was really rare..Darryl Hall's solo album was practically all straight R&B...plus Hall and Sara Allen (the muse for Sara Smile) co-wrote a lot of songs for R&B artists back in the day..Swept Away by Diana Ross comes to mind (that club mix was banging) [This message was edited Fri Aug 20 7:37:54 2004 by meltwithu] you look better on your facebook page than you do in person

Don't forget Madonna. The "Like A Virgin" single was a top 10 R&B hit in 84-85. Maybe it was because it sounded so much like "Billie Jean."

Lifetime Pass
Jon B MC Serch (has an FM morning show on a urban radio station in Detroit, is always in the Detroit hip hop scene) Beastie Boys Rick Ruben Had a Pass once, still OK for past contributions Lisa Stansfield ("Been around the world and I yie yie...") Simply Red Madonna (the girl made a song about a black gay dance called "Voguing" that still gets played to this day -- too bad she didn't mention any black stars in her "stars rap") Gwen Stefani (Eve's "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" was bumpin' in the streets) Nu Shooz Scritti Politti David Bowie ("Fame" and "Let's Dance") The Clash (had a pass for a second with "The Magnificent 7") Talking Heads (had a pass for a second with "Once In A Lifetime") Tom Tom Club New Kids on the Block (KDAY 1580 AM in L.A. -- a rap station -- used to bump "Right Stuff") Kamron (of Young Black Teenagers) played "Jamal" in "House Party II" Pass Revoked Justin TimberFAKE Vanilla Ice Marky Mark . When I saw GM in 1988 on the "Faith" tour, I'd say the audience was 35% black. He got quite a bit of R&B radio airplay in the 80s. Quite a bit in the 1970s, and a bit in the 80s. The 80s stuff was more straightfoward pop, so they pretty much only got airplay on the Top 40 stations (while their ballads became the benchmark of the "light rock, less talk" stations). A shame really, because at one time those white boys really had some R&B cred. Still, to this day you'll find older black folks who think fondly of their stuff. For some wierd reason, white folks are always the ones to scoff at this. Maybe its because the only stuff they here IS on the light rock stations??!?!?!? Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

The only real lifetime passes go to Jon B. and Teena Marie. PERIOD.
EMINEM??? Oh HELL NO! Black folks don't love Em, white folks just think we do because we give him props for having skillz as a rapper. Em would get his ASS beat in the hoods across America (yeah, what was all that n*gg** shit you said back in the day? Say it now, biatch!" )while Teena gets mad love because we KNOW she's sincere. She was doing the R&B thing at the sacrifice of becoming HUGE. Teena was vocally sweeping the floor with her contemporaries at the time, but she stayed R&B instead of going pop. Same with Jon B. I bet that boy doesn't even know any rock music. A temp pass was handed out to Pink, who is in violation and got it revoked. Holla back when you come back, Pink. Remy Shand - pass pending. Kraftwerk - had a pass in the 80s. Still okay for past contributions. Same goes for the Art of Noise and the Doobie Brothers. (they got hella airplay on R&B stations) George Micheal had a lifetime pass, but got put on probation when he came out of the closet. Hate to say it, but its true. He could get it back if he dropped nother R&B CD like he did back in the day. [This message was edited Fri Aug 20 9:27:56 2004 by BlaqueKnight]

Plus, he is only known by largely BLACK AUDIENCES anyway. To keep it real, most black people I know (myself included) can't stand Eminem. I remember this one female (born & raised in Detroit) telling me that she hated Eminem and that a lot of people in the D think he's a cornball. I used to live in the Detroit area and I rarely heard Eminem's songs on the urban stations. He largely got play on Channel 955 or some pop station. So he should be put in the "OK for past contributions" category. P!NK definitely can get her pass renewed if she stop with the rocker grrrl sh*t. LOL! C'mon, Pink, come back home! LOL!!! I'm no fan of Eminem, and I wish he'd go away already, but anyone who thinks he's not getting played on R&B radio is fooling themselves. He's wracked up a number of hits on the R&B charts, and those are tallied by monitoring R&B/hip-hop stations. I'm not gonna say I've polled any number of people, but I know plenty of people who love him, and plenty who dislike him (regardless of their own race). On the other hand, I've heard some of the biggest praise for him come from black people in the industry (Missy Elliott, Dr. Dre, Snoop, Timbaland). People who are highly praised often polarize audiences.
As far as him apparently not being played on Detroit stations goes - not too shocking. Prince, especially in his early days, was never really in heavy rotation on Twin Cities stations. I think hometown audiences can be particularly fickle.

Snoop & Em are on the same team so to speak. To catch you up, go listen to "Say What You Say" and check the production credits. Guess who? Timbaland. Who is Missy down with? Timbaland. Didn't Missy "bus a rhyme" with Em? Businessmen/women often back up/protect their joint ventures. Its smart business. Those underground tapes with him yelling nigg** this and black b*tch that have revoked any chance he could ever have of getting a pass. Black folk will always think in the back of our minds that may be what's really in his heart. "Can't truss him!"

Yeah, radio dj's used to think Hall & Oates were black. They used to send the "Sarah Smile" single in a plain white sleeve to the black dj's so the dj's wouldn't know they were white. Yeah, in the mid 70's, they got heavy airplay on black radio. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
