I've really grown to appreciate Kylie since "Fever". It's THIS close to being an obsession. But c'mon guys, as dance pop divas goes she's the pinnacle. I think what it really comes down to is two things, you either have to be a dance aficianado or gay to really appreciate her.

I really don't think the U.S. gets Kylie.

To the rest of the world, she's seen separately from Britney, Jessica, Christina - even Madonna. I really do think that America just sees her as another blonde pop-tart.

She isn't, at all.

She's a performance artist whom works in the field of music. It may not be as automatically apparent as Devo or John Cage or Bowie, but it's still art.

Just because it's populist, doesn't make it any less valid. It's Warhollian.

I think a lot of people here are taking her at face-value.

I liked Kylie's duet with Nick Cave, "Where The Wild Roses Grow". It's a magnificent piece of gloom-pop.

I looked throught the liner notes of her greatest hits and she barely writes any of her own music, maybe on the odd song she co-wrote it but it looks to me as if she lacks songwriting ability.
Her voice is nothing to brag about and IMO most of her music is mediocre.
She got her break first being on an Australian television program and then moved into the music industry through her foot in the door. Just like Hilary Duff.

As a "national identity", i will go with Nicole Kidman anyday. Now, i ain't saying Kylie is bad, but she is over-hyped and over-loved by many of us aussies. She is hardworking, but for me, she is still too "manufactured"- and i am not talking about her looks- which aren't bad, but some of us prefer something that don't resemble kylie minogue.
