But, do they get the "black pass?"

They probably still do from folks that only know them from their association with Eddie Murphy.

Their whole persona, which smacked of minstrel show to some, was kinda dicey.
Brian O'Neal is a good songwriter though.

Janet had hers revoked right after the Superbowl. Black breasts are apparently a no-no or something rolleyes.

SEX book 1992, David Letterman 1994 hhhhhmmmmm who was treated badly after that? it wasn't cause of race. it was SEXUAL OVERDOSE. Janet just did on Primetime TV Madonna's you had to buy or it was late nite.

When are people going to realize this?

Sex is the biggest taboo in the US not race.
You CANNOT use the name of God, or religion, to justify acts of violence, to hurt, to hate, to discriminate- Madonna

I think 2-Tone and that whole sound was sooooo underrated. Bands like The Specials, The English Beat, The BodySnatchers, and The Selecter didn't just revolutionize the pop of the time by reviving Ska and adding it to their Punky/Reggae party. Lest we forget that the underlying value of 2-Tone was about racial unity and peace and harmony. The Black, Whites and everyone in between all united for their love of one thing: SKA!!!!! And consider the fact that this was at a time of racial tensions and riots and stuff happening in Thatcher's England. disbelief

I think this movent is one of the very few in music that promoted diversity and racial unity, as well as get accepted by Blacks and Whites alike. They definitely spoke the gospel.

The Specials

The Bodysnatchers

The English Beat

The Selecter

I like the rock acts:

Living Colour
Bad Brains
Fishbone
24-7 Spyz
Jean Beauvoir

...and a special nod to Brooklyn band Candiria. Only the vocalist is black, but they mix hardcore with jazz to achieve something special.

Let's at the Bus Boys, too!

But, do they get the "black pass?"

Jean beauvoir was the man back in the day.

Some other possible lifetime passes from the old school...

Paul Robeson (a stretch)
Possibly based on guilt over his being the 1st American banned from TV in 1950 and blacklisted by the record companies in 1953 for his supposed communist ties.

Johnny Mathis

Duke Ellington

Nat King Cole
(hell, he even had an NBC TV show...for a minute)

Johnny Mathis has already been listed.

James Ingram's pairings with...
John Tesh
Michael McDonald
Linda Rondstadt
Dolly Parton
...pretty much guarantee him a pass.

I'd also add The Trammps and those brothers that played "Shout" in Animal House.

I know what u mean. There are some great artists being mentioned on these threads. I love soul/jazz/funk with a passion and would love to talk about it some more, but there's something about these threads that seems backward to me.

Is there really such a thing as The White Pass? White music is basically taken from black music anyway...

It looks like all that's really being done here is substituting some colloquial terms (White Pass/Black Pass) for standard industry marketing terms (Crossover/Reverse Crossover).
