CLASSIC ROCK SUCKS.

Where I work, I'm forced to listen to the classic rock station just about every night (low men on the totem pole don't get dibs on the radio dial).

I get to hear lots of hits from the '50s and '60s, and every once in a while, a couple of cheezy listening hits from the early '70s...but...

What about the late '70s and, hello, THE '80s?

A song from 1982 is 20 years old. A song from 1987 is 15 years old. Would those not be considered "classic", or is it a generational thing? Can old pop songs only be crowned "CLASSIC" if it was released during the youth of the Boomer generation?

Let's face it - Generation Xers are getting up there. We're not sullen little twentysomething slackers anymore. And Culture Club and Eurythmics ain't getting any more cutting edge with age, but they sure do bring back some memories...

When will "When Doves Cry" replace "My Baby Loves Lovin'" on the classic hits playlist?

When do I get MY nostalgia? mad

i used to work at a store where the music drove me nuts, it was classic hits, but it was the worst songs i've ever heard! the songs drove me nuts, and it's part of why i left my job, i couldn't take the torture any longer! (hehe) but there are some great classic songs from the 60's, 70's and even before...it's just that our jobs don't choose them. why can't they play deep purple, jimi hendrix, otis redding, marvin gaye?????

But Classic Rock formats ain't gonna play no Culture Club, and the vast majority of CR formats ain't gonna play anything by Prince either. Usually those formats cater to mid 60s thru 70s (and sometimes) early 80s guitar-based ROCK music. If you want old Prince songs and Culture Club you'll have to tune into 80s radio formats.

Okay, but my point is, in thirty years, will classic rock still be classic rock and will '80s music still be known as '80s music, or at some point will programmers lump '80s music in with all the rest of the oldies? As it stands, I feel like music of the '50s and '60s is supposed to be put on some kind of pedestal as "nostalgic" and "when music was music", but shit - the stuff I grew up is old now too, and Duran Duran is to me as the Monkees were to my Mom, dig?

I would if:

a) we were allowed to wear headphones at my job;
b) I had any say in what musical din dominated the office space.

I'll check your show out at my next job....wink

Sooner or later (probably sooner) the radio industry will most likely change. Simply because the music industry is changing as we speak, for numerous reasons. Recording artists are in an uproar about a number of things, as are music industry execs. There's a lot of political bs going on, and all I can see in the near future is that it will eventually get better because now people are collectively taking action where their careers are concerned, and with the advent of the technological revolution (with online music) the industry has to change how they do business. How much better is something nobody can put a finger on. But the times, they are a changin'.

Classic rock is better than most of the complete shit that's been released in the past 2 decades.

Welp, if it bothers you that much time to get a new job!! lol I work right next to an old lady all day and I put speakers on my computer and listen to prince all day long. She doesn't complain as long as I dont' crank it. But there was one time when somebody gave her a little boom box and she brought in Rikki Nelson.....something mysteriously happend to the boombox the next day and it never worked again. I wonder what happened to it....

What about getting a diskman or something? You won't bother anybody by that.

..there is a lot of good music from that period...jimi, janis, bowie, zepplin, trex, the velvet underground, lou reed, and on and on...the unfortunate thing is just like all radio stations these so-called 'classic rock' stations stick to a playlist that plays only the same songs over and over and over...
i mean the problem is not even the artists and bands they pick necessarily..the problem is that they don't bother to explore the rest of the catalogs by em...
believe it or not t-rex had a lot more and a lot cooler things than just 'bang-a-gong...' it's frustrating for sure...
...start singing along very loudly and off-key and act like you're totally into it...then they might change the station just so they don't have to hear you..hehe..

I've never understood people that can stand radio playlists (let alone excruciatingly annoying DJs), so I feel your pain.
