Walter Hawkins made my favorite gospel song of all time, "Thank You Lord". headbang And Tremaine's singing on Goin' Up Yonder is wonderful.

Tramaine Hawkins' Goin' Up Yonder is one of the greatest gospel recordings ever.

And you cannot go wrong with Mahalia Jackson. She's considered the best for good reason. Her voice is moving, and I love Trouble of the World (the funeral scene in Imitation of Life where she sings it is so sad sad)! There's a 2-disc set of her recordings through Columbia/Legacy, Gospels, Spirituals & Hymns, that is a good starting place.

I can NOT listen to Mahailia without crying. I have a Best of CD and I always have to get the tissues. . .

There've been some good ones mentioned already and some that I think suck. But, lord have mercy, no one has mentioned Richard Smallwood!! disbelief He's the Thomas Dorsey of this generation. Every Sunday millions of churches are singing his songs "Total Praise", "I Love The Lord", "Jesus, You're The Center Of My Joy", "Psalm 8", "I Will Sing Praises", "My Everything (Praise Waiteth)", etc. To his peers in the game he's the "Mozart of Gospel" because of his haunting harmonies and his skills at the piano.

My wife and I had the pleasure of performing with him two years ago. He's so cool...sat there for like two hours singing approx. 2,000 autographs at the end of the show.

Check him out! nod

Also excellent orchestral arrangements--I play violin on his Live in D.C. album (I also play on Donnie McClurkin's Live in London, which features We Fall Down)

she sang at my church a couple of times. At first I thought she was overrated, but she showed out when she came and sang with her aunts one time. I knew then, that she was the truth.

PS. How about B98.5 can't go 25 minutes w/o playing "I Can Only Imagine" by Mercy Me.

The great thing about gospel music to me is that it can make you cry both tears of joy and tears of pain, almost a cleansing, you know?

While everyone else was bumping Open My Heart, I was bumping In The Midst Of It All. The end of that song makes me want to jump up and down.

Even though I should be into new age (by me being so young), I'm basically into old school artists/ basically groups. Don't get me wrong, not all of today's contemporary gospel is bogus, though. Check out Darius Brooks. His choir's pretty cool. Donnie McClurkin is really good, too. nod

But I'm surprised no one has mentioned Albertina Walker and Dorothy Norwood..... omg

Besides them, I'm really into
Evelyn Turrentine-Agee and the Warriors
The Pilgrim Jubilees
The Jackson Southernaires
The Williams Brothers
Frank Williams
Carlton Pearson (Live at Azusa 1 & 2)
The Mighty Clouds of Joy

and my all time favorite: The Canton Spirituals woot!
you should check out some of their stuff.....
from the album, Live in Memphis:
Mississippi Poor Boy
Heavenly Choir
Jeremiah
I'm In Your Care
and more.....

from Live in Memphis 2:
Send Me (I'll Go)
Searching
It's Gonna Rain (C'mon, children)
Depending On You
Holy Ghost Praise
and more.....

So check 'em out! biggrin
They did WHAT??!.... disbelief
