Van Hunt - Can anyone fill me in?

Title says it all really!

Not heard any of his stuff. Have read a couple of reviews and wondered whether the guy has got anything going on or if it's just the usual overhyped comparisons with Prince, Curtis Mayfield and the rest.

Van Hunt is a solid singer. There are some interesting cuts on the album bu don't expect to hear anything revealing there. Just another Maxwell/D'Angelo. Falls really short of keeping up to Prince's standard.

I don't understand why every so-called Neo Soul artist is supposedly trying to be Prince according to some. Granted, Prince's influence is imprinted on a lot of those who are marketed under that moniker, but Van Hunt's sound is more along the lines of Smokey Robinson and Curtis Mayfield. Unlike Andre 3000, Van doesn't blatantly sound like Prince, so that needs to be squashed.

Even the most original music isn't ever 100% original. So listen to Van on his own terms. I mean, damn, give an artist a chance before you write him or her off.

I wonder how those people who wrote Prince off after his first or second album felt after the mid to late '80s.

Van's got a solid album. The more I listened to it, the more I dug it, and I've been listening to it a lot lately. And I generally don't impress easily. My advice to you would be to listen to it (don't just hear it) prior to buying it - without the only Prince can make good music blinders.

Van Hunt is decent. Nice neo-soul. A record for the times. Nothing mind-blowing. But, keep in mind, I'm the same person that called Brandy's Afrodisiac one of the best albums of the year, so it's all up to you. lol

However, my favorite tracks on his record (which I recommend hearing to get a feel for the album) are:

Dust
Down Here In Hell (With You)
Who Will Love Me In Winter
Hold My Hand

.

Same here. Did nothing for me. Since everyone else is qualifyin their statments, I'll qualify mine too. biggrin In general, I'm not a big fan of most "neo-soul" artists (I really hate that damn term). Not to say many of them aren't talented. Quite the opposite. I just don't find a lot of it memorable. A lot of times something has to grow on me to fully appreciate it, but if it doesn't spur some interest in me right away, I just forget about it. That was the case with this cat. He's a'ight...just not for me.

Nor am I. I'm underwhelmed with the vast majority of 'em.

Dust is my least favorite son on that record.
The resi of the disc is much more soulful.
I agree with Supernova's first post.
Its a good record; especially for a first solo project.
