I read that book.

I like the Sex Pistols. They couldn't play for shit, but I still love their sound. shrug I can't really speak for others, but I like them because they bring back memories of when I first bought Never Mind the Bollocks and would listen to that album non-stop.

The Pistols, along with bands such as The Clash, The Damned, The Ramones, etc. paved the way for a lot of punk bands that came along in the 80s. Bands that to this day are still my faves. twocents

The pistols did suck, and they weren't so crazy early in their carreer, the execs made em that way.....

hell, they fired a great bass player so sid could play, and he totally sucked.....

but they have their place in punk, although i think the ramones have more credibility in that instance....

Genius, this is a serious question because i'd really like to know.
Why would one listen to a band that "couldn't play for shit"?
What's the attraction?

OK, serious answer. They were a hit because shitty playing or not, they were revolutionary. They were loud, they were edgy, and they sang about "bucking the establishment." And most importantly, they offered a break from all the arena rock and the disco that was sweeping the nation. Not that I don't enjoy that, but variety is always a good thing.

Anxiety

they were a bunch of snotty obnoxious kids who thought they were the shit and they wrote a few catchy rock songs that caught on because people were getting sick and tired of freakin' prog rock and barry manilow and wanted to hear something straightforward and rebellious.

they didn't really do anything astoundingly brilliant that hadn't been done before. they just happened to be at the right place at the right time with the right idea.

and as for the blink 182 comment, i lay blame more on the clash and social distortion for hatching THAT bird.

That was sort of a joke, but I like many different kinds of music. I really got into their Never Mind the Bollocks album when I was young, and therefore, I still listen to it once and a while to this day.

They're not my favorite punk band, that would have to be Bad Brains by a long shot, but I still run around my house sneering along with songs like "No Feelings" and "Submission" etc.

biggrin

I think the common thought here is that they were "down with the man" and youth really related.

Which is really why I still love punk rock but I guess more about he feeling of "fuck the man" with words, than it is about the musicanship.

Hey, is NOBODY here going to support the greatness of the Sex Pistols? Sadly, I guess we have no true punkers at prince.org. The Sex Pistols capture an explosive vibe and their influence exceeds musicality and extends into cultural and political obliteration. Sure you can say they were at the right place at the right time, rolleyes but that just means they had the guts and soul to blast through the 70's UK drudge. They made it the place and time. The place and time didn't make them. You gotta get the movement, not just the music to appreciate punk.

By the way, I play violin in the Punk Rock Orchestra. a full orchestra which performs symphonic arrangements of punk rock classics. Our Sex Pistols covers are some of my favorites, particularly Pretty Vacant. Their songs capture an electric, rowdy energy and lend themselves wonderfully to more complex arrangements. And I love Sid's voice.

So there, you posers. biggrin

One word... ATTITUDE! They had it in spades. Listen to God Save The Queen or Pretty Vacant loud and you will understand the appeal.

The band that recorded the early Pistol's singles could play - they weren't virtuosos or anything, but they were a fairly kick-ass garage-punk band.

Basically, you have to approach them keeping in mind the musical conditions that existed at the time. ELP were huge, Olivia Newton John's "I Honestly Love You" was everywhere. If you consider the Pistols in that light, they were fairly revolutionary. If you listen to the album minus that context, then you're not likely to be too impressed.

I'd also like to add that there were better bands to come out of the British punk explosion - much, much better. The Pistols were the figureheads, basically...

contrary to opinion they could actually play , it was only sid who couldnt play he went from looking good in the audience to looking good on the stage !! simple as that they ousted matlock cos he was boring ! and into the beatles !!! so says the legend. there was something about sid n' nancy they had an appeal cos really u just felt sorry for them ! yes they were always junked up but sid did give us the punk "my way "awsome video (check it out) !!!.

joe strummer after seeing the pistols said of his band the 101rs "we are finished" he then joined the clash with paul n' mick and set about being just like the sex pistols ,.... now this is why they will be remembered and revered FOR ALL TIME !!!!

THEY INSPIRED A WHOLE GENERATION TO PICK UP INSTRUMENTS AND PLAY (u didnt hav 2 b clapton or springsteen)

overnight THE SEX PISTOLS were responsible for,.....

siouxsie n' the banshees, the clash, generation x, the damned , stiff little fingers, 999, the boomtown rats, the stranglers , the jam, etc etc

even bands like blondie and the police were inspired by the pistols and punk rock in general !

the pistols stood for something the meant an awful lot to a lot o people , fuckin fed up with disco and prog rock pls try remember , its when things get stale like that its time to do something about it , and they did,.... all hail,...

johnny rotten/lydon

paul cook

steve jones

glen matlock

sidney vicious

and malcolm mclaren he was the guy ultimately responsible for punk as we know ir today !!!

oh and another thing ,..... sting , paul weller, mick jones, tony james , billy idol , siouxsie, an all are still goin today YEAH !!!

DONT DISS PUNK ROCK IT MEANS AN AWFUL LOT TO AN AWFUL LOT O PEEPS !!!

There isn't that many truly defining moments in Rock n Roll history if you look back over the last 50 years...

The Pistols are responsible for one of THE defining periods in Rock n Roll History. No question. John Lydon is a clever man who has an opinion worth listening to on a lot of subjects - not just musically.

People write them off without knowing anything about them (isn't that always the way)! Can't play (not true), can't dress etc

Lydon & The Pistols challenged everything by their style, their music, their lyrics and their performances.

Read John Lydon: ROTTEN - No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs then listen again to Never Mind The...

As a music lover, it's important to understand this period in music history and the effect it has had on music since (and up to now...)
