"Re-Invention" Overkill!!!!!!!!

RE-INVENTION RE-INVENTION RE-INVENTION

Shut Up Already!!! DAMN! mad

Since Madonna announced the name of her latest tour, all I read about is how this artist or that artist has "re-invented" themselves. Apparently the catch phrase in many an article lately. Please throw yourselves now from the bandwagon. disbelief
NO !!! Not every artist, including those that have been around since the begining of time have re-invented themselves. Or even evolved. rolleyes This also doesn't necessarily make them a bad artist....or that their music should be any less enjoyable. But some have remained stagnant (artistically/musically/image) since their 2nd release. Just because someone is successful does NOT mean it is due in part to re-invention.

Who are some artists that you feel "re-invention" has played a part in their success or career longevity? And...which have not.

re-invention=evolution evolution=re-invention? hmmm

thumbs up!

i think "reinvention" as an obligatory pop-star ritual has been around longer than madge's latest tour...read any story on david bowie since the "serious moonlight" tour, or any story on annie lennox AT ALL, and you'll see the word bandied around like gangbusters. of course, madonna herself is no stranger to this word over the years - but she's hardly opened the floodgates - it's just a symptom of lazy music journalism, which has been around for ages.

No no...I agree. Not implying that Madonna invented "re-invention" giggle I'm just stating that it is being used in articles excessively lately. Of course there have been many artists that have changed in the course of their career BEFORE Madonna..... i.e. Bowie, Cher, Elton John (somewhat)etc... Just seems like everyone wants to use that description lately.

re-invented herself? confuse

i suppose... re-invented herself from talented songstress into stank ho into mental patient into washed up has-been..... lol

i suppose you could say Whitney has "re-invented" herself too. starting at the same point as Mariah and ending up as a crackhead at the end. there were, of course, several "re-inventions" in between. you know, like bitchy diva, actress, wife & mother, etc.... smile

Jennifer Grey is a great example of plastic surgery removing a unique feature (in this case, thinning out her nose) that really looked good. She had an interesting, very watchable face, but now it's merely plain.

Damn cute in: Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Dirty Dancing

Not so cute in: everything after the rhinoplasty

i recently saw something with prince being called the master of re-invention. i disagree. i don't think prince has really re-invented himself much at all. that is not an insult and no malicious intent is hidden in that statement (obviously, since i am here at a prince site, lol). prince has always been prince. yes, he wears different outfits and changes his style of dress and all...like everybody in the business...but he doesn't change who he is. to me, that is the essence of re-invention. bowie changed his entire image...not just his clothes. madonna changes her whole persona...and often times her identity...every few years. to me, that is re-invention. aside from the jehovah's witness conversion, p has not re-invented himself. even with the conversion, he remained christian and (other than some serious tweaks) has remained steadfast to the same social/political/religious beliefs.

i agree with chico. it seems liek everyone has been credited with re-inventing themselves lately, even if it simply involves hiring a new producer or wearing a new dress. there is a mystique involved in re-invention and there are few that do it.

I will probably get killed by some 4 saying this, and I do llike some of the Madonna's work, but i have to say that her "new" tour is her lowest point in over a decade. I don't think some of those songs work under the guise of the lick of paint she has given them. Perhaps i just don't like when a "classic" is deemed by an 'artist' as needing some sort of 're-invention'. I will admit that sometimes it can work, as P's accustic set of his 'classics' has proven, but can even that b considered as a 're-invention'? If the answer is 'yes', then it sure worked 4 P. unfortunately i cannot say the same thing about Madonna's latest live tour. For me it just don't work.

its funny how we all see things differently because, in my opinion, the re-invention tour is one of the most inspired tours i've ever seen. everything except imagine worked really well, i thought.

i think they're saying the way some of the songs are re-worked. and to some extent, they're right. some of the new versions are great and some are lame (Deeper & Deeper, Mother & Father/Invention)....

I've seen the show three times, and I think it is the best tour Madonna has ever done. And I don't think the "new" arrangements were all that dramatic,or much different than the original versions. That's a good thing, because I was afraid that she was gonna go overboard and totally change the sound of these songs. With the exception of "Deeper and Deeper" and "Holiday",most of the changes were very subtle.I think the whole "re-invention" theme of this tour refers more to a spiritual re-invention,as opposed to a musical one (if that makes any sense, lol).

Well how do you know if i've seen it or not?? It is just my opinion. That's all.

I am the biggest fan of the early, much younger Madonna.

i LOVED deeper and deeper! i would have preferred the original version of mother and father but i didn't dislike the way she did it...i loved that she blended in intervention into the song!!

I loved "Deeper and Deeper" too! That was incredible, hearing the song that way.I kinda wish that she would have done a whole segment like that, featuring re-worked jazzy versions of songs like "Cherish","True Blue","Bad Girl" and other songs.Wouldn't that have been cool?

well i hated it. those other songs you mentioned probably would have been better served with that treatment, but don't turn a powerful dance track into that crap. just sing something else from I'm Breathless if you must have a companion to Hanky Panky.
