If your wondering where to start, I would suggest "40 Licks" ,the 40th anniversary greatest hits comp. But for proper albums, I would suggest the following as essential:

Beggar's Banquet
Let It Bleed
Get Yer Ya-yas Out
Sticky Fingers
Exile On Main Street
It's Only Rock'n Roll
Black & Blue
Some Girls
Tattoo You
Voodoo Lounge
Stripped

i personally dig Let it Bleed and Exile on Main Street. Beggars Banquet is up there. I think some of the more recent stuff is pretty good too, especially Steel Wheels. And I'm a sucker for Undercover, which alot of people don't like. Tattoo You also.

Some Girls and Sticky Fingers are probably musts too.

TOTALLY AGREE. These are the 4 to start with. After you've digested these 4 classics, pick up BLACK AND BLUE, SOME GIRLS, & TATTOO YOU. Other than the early stuff (pre-BUTTONS) that's all you need.

Yeah, these are the four classics - their peak period without question. They were a good singles act/inconsistent album band prior to this period, There's decent stuff after this period of course, but these are the "must haves".

My favorite is "Some Girls" and "Tatoo You". "Forty Licks" is a good 2 CD compilation.
Andy is a four letter word.

You may also like to get the "London Singles" 3-CD box set, and an early album with originals and blues covers called "12X5"

Exile On Main Street is overrated. I have all the stones album and i cant make it all the way through it without the skip button. Mick Jagger also doesn't understand its reputation he says its badly mixed with loads of filler and he is right on the nail. Get it anyway to make up your own mind but i don't like it. Their best album from start to finish is Beggars Banquet, absolute genius, Jigsaw Puzzle is brilliant.

You also should check out

Let it Bleed
Sticky Fingers
Goats Head Soup (has some of their sickest playing, a real sleazefest, great production!)
Some Girls
Undercover (underrated album)

Their last studio album Bridges to Babylon has some great Keith sung tracks on it and is worth a listen.

Thanks jackflash.

Btw, I had 12x5. Really sturdy, plastic sleeved, vinyl on the London label.

Exile is an album that I have yet to make up my mind about, and haven't gotten thru it without skipping a lot. But as I generally do I'll get back to it and give it the time it needs, if that's what it needs.

Since other people have already listed albums I would have, I also have to say that I agree with a couple of people who mentioned 1989's Steel Wheels. It's a highly underrated album, and easily the best thing they recorded since their heyday if you ask me. I'm not in love with every single song, but most of 'em hit the bullseye mark. It's worthy.

Agreed. That album has a voodoo nightmare vibe. Classic rock stuff.
(Along with some nice Mick Taylor guitar.)
