What did you think of Stevie Wonder's "Songs In The Key Of Life" album cover

From the first day I bought this album, I've always wanted 2 know what the album cover was about. I mean, it shows a drawing with Stevie inside some clouds, I think. I don't get this drawing. I just need someone to explain that cover to me? The album cover is beautiful, but it's absoulutely strange.

Maybe it's how Stevie invisions a keyhole to look like, but I agree, I always thought of it as fire catching to some paper and burning it. confuse

Deb you're giving me way too much credit but i'll give it a shot.

I have no clue as to the real meaning.
Looking at it now, could possibly represent a birth canal (using the genteel term)?

tA that's not a stretch (no pun intended). As I was looking at the cover again, and before I saw your response, I was thinking perhaps it's supposed to represent a womb. I love "looking" finding the unexpected in the ordinary, but I've never thought too deeply on this one. I like this post.

"Sugar Walls!" Oh, no! lol lol

SEE THERE, I KNEW IT ALL ALONG. (yeah, right) rolleyes

Many times we try to see more than may actually be there.
Other times we don't look deeply enough.
Aye, there's the rub.

True. Like I never used to get how people would look at art and see something very profound when all I'd see was scribble.

And like, how I never understood that thread about Prince's influence on house music.

A simple abstraction of soundwaves or thoughts resonating/radiating from him perhaps? Or (this is far fetched) a reference to a birth canal? I don't think it was meant to be looked at literally.

It's always kind of reminded me of what I see when I stare right into the sun, the perimiter shimmers with black rings. That also fits in with the overexposed look of his head.

...As in an overexposed photograph. When a photo is overexposed, the highlights are blasted out.

Maybe I'm arse-fixated, but I always imagined it's similar to what a proctologist sees on their monitor, when they shove a miniature camera up your rectum.

eek

I just did a quick Google, found an image and I really wasn't far off the mark!

I never thought about what it meant, but perhaps it is about getting past layer after layer to the essence of stevieness in the center

I just went on www.rollingstone.com and I just heard that the cover design was a vertex, and I think that's what the design is. A Rolling Stones magazine reviewer once said that back in '76 when this came out. The design is more thicker than a vertex. What do you think of that?

And that design does look like that:
