The Stone Roses debut album finally cracks the U.K. top 10. The Stone Roses debut album has finally managed to enter the U.K. top 10 album charts some fifteen years after its release. It's likely that the recent Live DVD has helped to renew interest in the album. The Stone Roses originally peaked at no.19, although that didn't prevent it from being hailed by many as one of the greatest albums of all time. It currently sits at no.8. It'll be interesting to see how well it does in the next few weeks.
Another point of interest on the album chart is that Michael Jackson has re-entered at no.13 with Off The Wall. I've no idea what has prompted that... but I ain't complaining.

in the observer music monthly mag this month they had the top 50 or 100 British Albums as chosen by musicians & music critics & DJs, basically.
and the stone roses came in at Number 1. so that maybe helped a bit... fyi, revolver was number 2.

That just doesn't seem possible!!! I remember the Stone Roses being huge in 89-90...they were the biggest thing in British pop music during that time.
Mind you, it was a cumulative success - the album started slowly and the phenomenom built gradually...but I'm still amazed the album never cracked the top ten once.

'Tis true. None of the singles made the top 10, either. It did manage a healthy 86 weeks on the chart, tho'.

I think to some extent the reason why The Stone Roses never cracked the top 10 UK album chart was at the time they were more of a cult band; the whole baggy/indie band scene had not really captured the nation's imagination as a hold on it's release in May 1989.
It was only after Britpop exploded around 1996 where people harked back to how great The Stone Roses was as an album and how The Stone Roses were pioneers in influencing the many bands that rose out of that scene. Particularly Oasis whose success must be attributed greatly to The Stone Roses. As an album, The Stone Roses still sounds as today as it ever did. It's a timeless album with raw and real songs born of the Sixties. There's so many great anthems on it, the beautiful melody of 'Waterfall' to the grand finale 'I Am The Resurrection'. Go into any indie club in the UK and you can almost bet that a track from The Stone Roses will end the night. Thoroughly recommended. Particularly if you can get your hands on a copy which includes 'Fools Gold'.

NONE of them? that's just crazy! Nope! Not a single one. Doesn't make the album any less great, tho'.

I know I'm being redundant, but I still find this absolutely astonishing. In 90/91 the Stone Roses were practically the only three words that mattered in British pop music. Practically every band that broke in that time period were either copying or extrapolating their sound.

Still, what a cool feeling it must be to know that an album you released fifteen years ago has bettered its original chart placing. That kinda stuff is pretty much unheard of. And yeah, there were many bands who emulated their sound, but none were as good.

True enough..it's a shame their subsequent career was such a bust - though I haven't heard any of Ian Brown's solo material, so I can't comment on that. Nevertheless, that first album has stood the test of time very well. Every track on it still sounds fantastic. I might get accused of hyperbole for this, but I think it can hold its own, song-for-song, against any classic album one could name - Pet Sounds, Rubber Soul, etc.

Every song is at the very least a good song. And there's not many albums you can say that about. It remains one of the very best debuts of all time. And rightly so.
