LOL....I remember my sister telling me "She sounds just like Stevie Wonder!" when we first heard that song. It's a great song, though. The Pointer Sisters had a very successful period during 1983/84,with the hits "I Need You","Automatic" and "Jump(For My Love)".Btw,their 1982 album 'So Excited' includes a remake of Prince's "I Feel For You".

"No way to contol it,it's totally Automatic
whenever you're around
I'm walkin' blindfolded,completely Automatic
all of my systems are down, down, down"

Good Morning Everyone.....Can I get a show of hands of all the people who thought that was a new Stevie Wonder song back in 1984 when they first heard The Pointer Sisters's top 10 song "Automatic". Man, you couldn't tell me that wasn't Stevie Wonder. Even the lyrics sounded like something he would have penned. I heard it this weekend on our 80's Musical Weekend radio station (98.5 FM) and it bought back great memories. Great song!!!!!Long live the music of the 80's!!!!!

OMG!!!

I actually said that when I 1st heard the song! I told my brother, cool, Stevie has a new song out, and I loved it! What a trip, I thought I was the only 1.

Do u remember Yarbrough & Peeples "Don't Stop The Music" with those muppet voices on it...loved that one 2.

Yes June 7, I remember the "muppets" on Don't Stop The Music", but the real kicker for me was "Alvin And The Chipmunks" on Cheri's hit called "Murphy's Law" in 1982.
Still can't get over that one. I laugh everytime I hear it.

Yeah, I'm looking at old threads...thought I'd add 2 this one:

What about YAZ, the album cover of "Upstairs At Eric's" was a trip 2 look at.

They had that hit "Move Out" and another one, but I can't think of it...anyone?

***Will To Power "Baby,I Love Your Way/Freebird"(1988)

***Dino "I Like It"(1989)---I was a Dino fan! His first album '24/7' is a catchy dance/pop/R&B collection that also contained the sexy ballads "Never 2 Much Of U" and the title track.I thought he was gonna go far.

***Kiara "This Time"(with Shanice)(1988)---"I don't think you realize what went on inside...now I'm never gonna give up til I'm back by your side..."

even though the 80's was the start of alot of the crap that followed since, from 80-through early 84 it was Solid.there was some Good stuff afterwards but alot of it was Crap.and I Applaud the 80's for not making a 5 Year Run out of a One or two Hit trick like it has been going on in the Biz for the past Several Years.it was cool that many of thsoe 80's Acts Vanished away.however many of those One or two Hit Wonder Acts had more Going for them with that than alot of these Acts out NOW IMHO.Rockwell"Somebody's watching Me" Even though MJ was on the Hook that was a Cleaver,Witty&Cool Jam.Thomas Dolby was Grooving as well.Nu Shooz"I Can't Wait" Still can Rock a House can't say that about many of the acts out now with there Greatest Hits coming after they have been out like 5 Years??

my fav 80s music: Billy Squier, Quarterflash, Def Leppard.
my fav 80s songs: "Telephone" by Sheena Easton, "Crimson & Clover" by Joan Jett, and "Boys In Town" by the Divinyls -- anyone remember that video? loved it.

Cool thread. I agree with much here.

Describing most of these acts "as one-hit wonders, do them a great dis-service. It implies that they made one record then dissappeared completely. Maybe that was the case in America, but a lot of theses acts were big (some still are) in Europe. Someone asked about A-ha, well going from memory I can think of at lest six other hits.. The Human League..erm quite a few, lol.. and Gary Numan has had around 25 top forty singles... the last only a few weeks ago...
erm... Thomas Dolby made some wonderful music which occasionally reached the UK chart... Dexys Midnight Runners had varying degrees of success both before and after "Come On Eilee"...
Its times like these I regret giving my Guiness book of British Hit Singles away. smile

(but most of the other acts mentioned were terrible!}

Billy Squier!!! Oh man, do u remember "Stroke Me"??? In the video, he pranced around in this set that looked like a bedroom, in his flashdance styled ripped up shirt and tight jeans...2 much!!! It was then that I started quesitoning his sexuality...but then all the rockers where wearing tight spandex pants! Some of 'em still do! Cool song tho, stroke me, stroke me! Stroke! Stroke!

Actually that song you just described was his Rock Me Tonight..which killed his career. He had a pink Flashdance shirt and played around on satin sheets lol.The Stroke was a cheesy performance vid.

Here is my list...

***Thomas Dolby "She Blinded Me With Science" (1983)---I guess people consider this a "novelty song",but there is NO denying its' appeal. This track is funky as hell, and recieved ALOT of airplay on R&B stations, too.

***Squeeze "Tempted" (1981)---The most underrated song of the 80s,imo.This bluesy pop song is one of my all-time favorites, from ANY decade! "It's not my conscience that hates to be untrue...I answered my reflection, tell me what is there to do?...Tempted by the fruit of another,Tempted but the truth is discovered, what's been going on,now that you have gone..."

***The Tubes "She's A Beauty" (1983)---In the summer of '83,this catchy rocker was all over MTV..."Don't fall in love,She's A Beauty,a one in a million girl, now why would I lie?"

***Johnny Hates Jazz "Shattered Dreams (1988)---"Now,you've given me,given me,nothing but a Shattered dream, shattered dream..." This cool, midtempo pop song has an irresistible charm about it.

***Cheri "Murphy's Law"(1982)---This R&B song starts off with this hilarious line..."I hate to tell you,but I got a bit of bad news,I don't love you no more".OUCH!!

***Sinnamon "Thanks To You"(1982)---Like "Murphy's Law",this song also starts off with a woman dissing her no-good boyfriend. She begins the song by calling him up,saying "Yeah,it's me...Just called to let you know I won't be needing your LOVING SERVICES any longer".She spends the rest of the song raving about her new lover.

***Oran "Juice" Jones "The Rain" (1986)---Along with Prince's "Kiss",this was arguably the best R&B song of 1986.Y'all remember this one..."I saw you walking in the Rain, you were holding hands and now,it'll never be the same".But,the ending was a classic. His cheating girlfriend comes home, and he humiliates her by cancelling all her credit cards, taking her mink coat, and giving her a lecture she won't soon forget...lol...

***A Flock of Seagulls "I Ran" (1982)--- Forget about the crazy hairdos...lol...this song rocks!! "And I Ran,I Ran so far away...I just Ran,I Ran all night and day, couldn't get away".

***The Boys "Dial My Heart" (1988)---One of the best songs that LA and Babyface ever produced,"Dial My Heart" is infectious, catchy and just alot of fun.The hook-filled chorus is classic!

***Tease "Firestarter"(1986)---Regrettably,these guys never had another big hit. This song was an R&B smash in early 1986..."You're my Firestarter, you turn me on,I got a passion for you".

***Jellybean "Sidewalk Talk" (1985)---How lucky was Jellybean Benitez?.His girlfriend was Madonna. She wrote this song for him,and even makes a cameo appearance on the chorus. Some guys have all the luck:)

***The Waitresses "I Know What Boys Like"(1982)---Yeah,it's a cheesy song, but a GOOD cheesy song (does that make any sense??...lol...)

***The Jamaica Boys "It's That Lovin' Feeling(1987)---An R&B hit in late '87,this catchy jam was hot!

***The Musical Youth "Pass The Dutchie"(1983)---Y'all know you were singing this song back in the day...lol...

***Juicy "Sugar Free" (1986)---A very clever song! Your lover has left you,so you are now "Sugar Free"smile A minor hit on the R&B charts in late '86.

***Brenda K.Starr "I Still Believe"(1988)---"If there's one spark of hope left in my grasp,I'll hold it with both hands,it's worth the risk of burning to have a second chance".This is a top-notch song, full of wistful emotion and sadness, and killer vocals by the sorely underrated Brenda K.Starr.

***Haircut One Hundred "Love Plus One"(1983)---This song makes no sense to me,but it's a favorite of mine.

***Dexy's Midnight Runners "Come On Eileen" (1983)---This song is incredible! The sound is so unique,I can't even describe it...lol...too charming for words:)

***Frankie Smith "Double Dutch Bus"(1981)---In the summer of '81,we used to jam to this crazy song.If you've never heard it,you will be shocked at how weird it is! This is one of those songs where "you had to be there" to fully understand it's impact.

***Val Young "If You Should Ever Be Lonely"(1985)---Val was a protege' of Rick James, and this was her second single. It's an R&B jam that is all but forgotten.

***Sexual Harrassment "I Need A Freak" (1983)---Just curious about something...how many of you have heard this song? In my area,it was a huge jam and got alot of radio airplay, but it never became a national hit,so some of you probably have no idea what this song sounds like.It is VERY Prince-influenced.

***Rebbie Jackson "Centipede" (1984)---The music biz is so unfair.Rebbie can sing WAY better than her famous sister Janet, yet her career never really took off."Centipede" was written and produced by her brother Michael, and it is a gem.The chorus alone is simply stunning!!

Who sings "You're an Obsession"? That may not be the correct title either but the lyrics go something like this:

You're an obsession
You're my obsession
hmm hmm hmmm hmmm hmm hmm ( lol )
to make me sleep with you

Were they a one hit wonder? Love that song...
