I don´t understand how people can HATE this album...alright , it´s not a masterpiece, but wasn´t this what his yearning for freedom was about ?? To release any kind of album at any given time, without having to fulfill any expectations ?? Judging from a "amount-of-songs-I-really-like" ratio, this album is OK. I can´t , simply CAN`T stand tracks like I LIKE FUNKY MUSIC and PUSH IT UP, but that´s only two songs I dislike on this little sideproject...
I kinda like the rest of htis album, THE ONE is a great ballad, WASTED KISSES is another prime example of Prince the storyteller ( very much in the vein of SHY off of the GOLD EXPERIENCE, though heavy on the keyboards and with a much darker yet ghettoish storyliine) , and COME ON still is on heavy rotation in my household, especially the maxisingle . And speaking of Chaka and Larry..Chakas album is great, probably one of her best, and I hear this from long time Chaka fans...Vibe gave it a good review and back when it came out even rapper DMX, of all people, called it his favorite album during an interview.
Larry on the other hand...I mean , not to dis Larry, but I found lyrics like " I don´t want to be a new religion, that would be a tad bizarre " ( from UTOPIA ) very strange, coming from a man who is clearly not seen as a cult figure among the fans in any way..could be a Prince song though.
DON`T LET EM CHANGE U was a nice little jam...I don´t know, just bought it cause of the Prince involvement.
" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

when I first bought this album I had a great car stereo system with 12" speakers. Id sit there and play the album and thought it was alright, kinda irritating to listen too but decent.thinking something was wrong with my stereo why the CD wouldnt end was confusing me.I turned up the volume and forgot about it.I just about crashed my car when Wasted Kisses popped on loud as a cannon, I completely forgot about it!!I must have been thinking some dark thoughts because I remember I thought the devil was comin' out them speakers, my heart was beating like a linn drum machine!! I could not help but to feel that somewhere Prince was chuckling over this little secret, scaring me to death like that....geez!

This album was released just as I was discovering Prince in a major way, so listening to it as I discovered albums such as Dirty Mind, Around The World In A Day, Parade etc, this album sounded awful. In hindsight however I can appreciate certain aspects of it. Come On is outstanding, deserving of any prince album at any time. The One is nice, more bass heavy than your typical Prince slow jam and I like the lyrics.

I was always surprised he never released Until U're In My Arms, its a typical P ballad with a strong melody. Wasted Kisses is cool, although i dont seem to feel it as much as other people on here. I like Mad Sex, When U Love Somebody, and ive even been known to tap my foot to I Like Funky Music, although Im not sure im comfortable admitting that.

All in all it aint a good album, but it has some good stuff on it. It lacked a good opening / title track, and i think it is right to say P was spreading himself too thinly. Remember only a year previously he'd put some of his best recent songs on an acoustic album that was never released commercially. Lets just say this was a period where Prince was working things out. He's finally getting there, realising his creative freedom finally. Its just a shame some really good songs have suffered as a result of this (ie best songs off Emancipation, The Truth, NPS Rave etc.)
