LOL I couldn't believe my ears! I was dreaming when I wrote this, 4give me if it goes astray..."...What was this supernatural funk coming thru these speakers?? Was it an alien? confused Was the world coming to an end? confused Who cares! I was too busy dancing my ass off to notice!lol Alright you Orgers!...share your "1999" memories...The Album, Tour, and the videos too! lol

I was freakin' 4 years old when it came out.
Damn!!! What happened in 20 years -- much less ten?
And where are we now? Living in a generation of crap and looking back at the novelty of every decade.....and it all ended in the 90's when it became the decade that decided to STOP and look back at every other decade preceding it.....and yes, we're still in the 90's people, even if it is 2002.....we may be stuck there a little while longer.....hang in there, peoples!!!!

This album changed my life. I was pretty young when I convinced the store clerk to let me buy it. He knew it was x-rated, but let me have it anyway. I had to hide the album from my Dad cause my mom said that 1 on the cover looks alot like a penis and my dad was pretty strict. He really got freaked out when I played the record and the eye spun around in the middle of the turntable. It was the first time my dad realized I wasn't going to be a 9-5 businessman like himself! I got the album on cassette, cd and vinyl, love every song.

This was the first album I listened to. I was 12. I was hooked from the song "I Wanna Be Your Lover" but I only ever heard that on the radio. My cousin bought 1999 on tape and I remember just being so excited by it. I would come home everyday after school and lock myself in her closet (no pun intended) and listen to it over and over till my mom came to pick us up. I do remember being very afraid of Something in The Water though. That screaming towards the end, it scared me.

Even though I was a Prince fan from "I Wanna", it was this album that gave me a full taste of funk genius and I've been craving that funk ever since. Thank you Prince for saving the life of a little kid with not a lot of friends. I'm forever grateful.

The girls in junior high carried the album cover around with them in school. International Lover became a classic on day one.

This lp was the bomb!! One of the stankiest and funkiest lps EVER! As for as I'm concerned this is the lp that woke the public up to Prince. It had all the nastiness of James,George and Sly all rolled up into some new innovative FUNK.

it will be 20 years October 26th 2002.

Still have over 7 months 2 go.

Look for a special announcement regarding the 20th anniversary of 1999 from the Bump Squad in Early April.

Moonbeam

This album is the most stylistically like me! It ranks with Lovesexy as my favorite of all albums! I was only 2 when it was released (and yes I do have it on vinyl, Calhoun Sq! wink), but soon thereafter (maybe when I was 4), I remember knowing the title track. It quickly became my favorite song, and singularly got me into Prince. I remember sneaking the money that I had saved for 5 weeks worth of allowance to my brother when I was 9 so he could buy the album on tape for me. My mom wouldn't have approved, that's for sure! To this day, I probably listen to that album more than any other, and I credit it for being an early inspiration for me to get hardcore into modern music. smile I think it is one of the few "perfect" albums out there- every song is incredible!

It's true! I saw the "When Doves Cry" video in 1984 with my brother when our cousins played it for us, and I remember that it wasn't my first exposure to Prince- 1999 was. smile

OK! When I saw the "When Doves Cry" video, my cousins were babysitting me and my bro. It was the summer of 1984. They made me eat chocolate pancakes, even though I informed them that I HATE chocolate. I still tease them about that to this day! I also remember losing my velcro shoe on the way back from pre-school, and being too embarassed to claim it because the teacher said that she thought it was a girl's shoe...eek I don't have many memories from 1982, and I don't remember the first time I heard "1999," but I do remember that I knew it before seeing the video for "When Doves Cry." I remember thinking that the purple tear was cool. To be honest, I don't have many memories from 1984, but the ones I have mentioned are valid!

Anxiety

It was a picture of Prince in the 1983 Rolling Stone Yearbook that for some subliminal reason threw me into a pre-pubescent frenzy. "I MUST HAVE A COPY OF '1999'! I MUST HAVE IT NOW!!!!"

This is the oddball thing. I'd seen Prince before. I'd heard him before. I thought he was cool, but he didn't really make much of an impression. Then I saw that picture, and out of nowhere decided "this guy is a FREAKSHOW, and musically he just, somehow, GETS IT, and IT'S ALL ABOUT PRINCE!"

That little fit kinda subsided and I didn't get the album and I completely forgot about it, but then the next spring I saw the TV commercial for the Purple Rain movie for the first time, and I started freaking out all over again.

Don't think I've been quite the same since. wink

(And for the record - pardon the pun - I did finally get my vinyl copy of the 1999 album...it was a birthday gift from my GRANDMOTHER, who had no idea what she was buying me - my mom just told her I wanted it, so she got it. When I unwrapped it and took out the sleeves, my Grandma was all, "let's see what the inside sleeve looks like!" and I'm turning as purple as the album cover cuz of course, I discovered the picture of Prince's ass, and what 14 year old kid really wants to share a picture of Prince's ass with his grandmother, I mean REALLY? It was a horrible moment that I've laughed about ever since. At least he had the decency to wear GLOVES in the picture, ha...)

1999 was the first album I ever bought. I was 8 1/2 years old and saved 2 weeks worth of allowance and my mom took me to On Target Records in Skyline (San Diego). We brought it home and I didn't actually get to listen to it 4 a couple of days. My parents wanted 2 listen 2 it first. They let me listen, and I can remember them sitting there watching me groove. I guess it was some kind of experiment 2 them.

Anyway...from there on, I WORSHIPPED Prince.

My father regrets it 2 this day.
