people need to quit defending prince like he's their first born son anyway.... I had hoped that he'd be smarter than to say something like that. But had he said that about any other legend I'd have been offended too. Prince is a great artist but we shouldn't take stuff too personally! I'm giulty of it too . . . All of you can go to MTV'S website and click on MTV2 and do a search for Van Hunt. You can see the interview with Van. AND WHAT HE ACTUALLY SAID WAS, and i quote "Prince is my BIGGEST influence. It's very flattering to be compared to him, and i consider it an HONOR. He's a HERO OF MINE, and to think after all the years of practice, that i MIGHT be APPROACHING his level of musicianship, etc, etc, etc." So now all of you GO BACK and listen to the album WITHOUT prejudicial ears and realize that this is one of the most promising debut albums to come along in a VERY long time. Thank you. There have been misquotes around here before, it doesn't surprise me that this is just another one. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

LMAO Van Hunt is VERY talented. I read the title of this forum, and although I didn't see the interview, I knew that whoever posted it did so hearing what he/she wanted to hear. How sad. When I go to concerts, esp. aftershows, I often find myself looking around wondering who may be one of the nuts who post here, and think that Prince is a god or something. I wonder if all of the people bashing Van Hunt will come back, read this, and apologize to the man. Good Lord. You would think that this is a Brittany Spear's fan site with all of the blind idolatry going on.

Although in this case, 'mis-interpreted' or 'fabricated' might be more appropriate. I think Van Hunt's album is good, not great, but I like 'Seconds of Pleasure' better than anything on Musicology. I don't think all people who don't like this are drinking purple kool aid. I just think it seems that recently everyone has been throwing Prince's name around too frequently. It's like it's not enough you're in the game unless you're compared to Prince in some form or fashion. It used to be Stevie but now it's Prince. I'm not saying Van Hunt isn't true or genuine, it just gets redundant that's all. I don't mind artists giving him his props but it seems that isn't enough they don't just stop there, it always ends in some form of comparison. Anyway I am diggin Van Hunt's music. I just think artists do better when they refrain from being compared to others. I mean it's undeniable how many artists have directly influenced Lenny Kravitz yet he hates it when a writer brings up Prince everytime he does an interview you can just see it. He has mad love for P but he still wants to be respected for who he is. I do like Van Hunt but for what Van Hunt does and I think if he can keep that in perspective, he'll do well as an artist not just as a writer or musician.

You posted it to start some shit, so all the little purple zombies would be walking around wanting to eat Van's brains. If you're going to post some inflammatory shit, then at least take the time to make sure you've got what the person said accurately. And for what adorable2 had to say, I agree that the media is constantly looking for new artists to compare to Prince. You can't blame Van Hunt for that. He's not writing the reviews or telling people to compare him to Prince. As much of a Prince fan as he is, he's said that he'd rather be the next Sly Stone. I will say this, i hadn't been as excited about a debut record since the first time i heard a Prince record. And that's not bullshit. Don't stick me, I'm not the one responsible for the original BS post. BTW, I saw Dionne Farris perform in San Diego in '95 or so, and Van Hunt was in her band. I remember dude because he moved pretty easily between guitar and keys, as well as displaying vocal chops. He was a good musician back then and has been running with some pretty talented people ever since, so maybe he's not wrong to feel he "might be approaching Prince's level of musicianship". "Might be approaching" seems intentionally humble and somewhat broad, so maybe he's in the ballpark.

Its funny how some folk on here (I'm NOT naming names) bash anyone who dare compare themselves to Prince in any way, shape form or fashion. Even if this was Van Hunt's first recording; that wouldn't mean that he's new or inexperienced at making music, would it? NO. There are a lot of people who just don't understand the music biz and thinks that anyone good is gonna get signed right away or something. That's far from the truth. And you can't compare Prince's "For You" to anything made these days because if "For You" came out this year, what label would pick it up? Probably NONE. Check the charts. The new artists have to play a different game than the one giong on back in '79. Van Hunt respects Prince, but he's doing his own thing. I guess that means he's doomed to be called a copycat from here on out on Prince.org.
