Sure it is. Just because he may have written those songs the year before doesn't mean he never made any changes to the arrangements and tweaked some things later on before he released it. It happens all the time in the production process. Yes, even though it was still largely demos. [quote]Quite the contrary. Whether it was an artistic statement or not doesn't always have anything to do with the lyrical content. And quite frankly, it WAS a bold statement to explicitly spell out (which is exactly what he did) the things he was singing about. Raw sex. He had never done that before, and it had never been done before (at least on a mainstream relese). Now it may seem tame by today's standards. Lyrics aside: musically there was nothing remotely like it, even if people don't dig it. That in itself is an artistic statement. Yes, of course things can change in production. But it's not like Prince had 5 or 6 albums already out. It was just his 3rd album. My impression is that he was just showing another side himself, the more pop/rock side that he had not previously revealed. But the kind of stuff on Dirty Mind, I don't think was any kind of "new" discovery for him, personally. Whereas I believe Controversy is where he made a conscious decision to "boldly go where no man had gone before". I guess I can only sum up my point by saying what I've already said. My impression of Dirty Mind was that of young kid having fun. Perhaps with the exception of "Sister", the rest of the album you could pretty much take it or leave it - just great music, and having a fun time. Controversy though, couldn't be ignored, the artistic statements on that album (lyrically and musically) pretty much forced you to ask the question "Who is this guy, Prince?" The questions that were posed, and the way the material was presented demanded your attention. And for that reason, I just don't think the two albums are on the same level. But... everyone is entitled to their opinion. The "Our Father's Prayer" right smack in the middle of a funky jam?
That's The Lord's Prayer.
Thanks for the correction. But I think you knew what I meant.
I didn't say I didn't know what you meant, I just corrected the title. What... are you going to start saying "I know you are but what am I?" I guess my point was that you were being a bit anal about something that you obviously clearly understood. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When i first heard Controversy was around 9 or 10. I thought he was singing something nasty. I had no idea what the word Controversy meant. Great song. Great album. Do me, Baby and Sexuality classics! Peace and Love! Peace and Love!

OH!!! Snap!!! Controversy. Is still a hot tune to play at the clubs. But my favorite track is Private Joy!! I love that song! Man, Uncle P is the baddest songwriter out! This record " Controversy " Is a classic and it should be ranked up there with Dirty Mind and 1999. SOTT and PR are tight records, but Controversy, Dirty Mind and 1999 are my all-time favorite records. Peace “When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. Look, I corrected an incorrect title, if that makes you over-react I suggest you find out the reason for your over-reaction. Either that or get over it. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Controversy is a Classic. That's another Prince album where Prince couldn't do no wrong. My favorite is Let's Work, Private Joy, Do Me, Baby, sexuality and of course the Title track. One great album.
Nothing can stop us now I'm gonna show you how Let me see you Work, C'mon I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Jarret said: I always thought "Jack U Off" was about the catchiest song ever written. At least five times I would play it for a friend who'd never heard it, and promise them they'd be singing it to themselves the next day. ALWAYS worked. Even if they were put off by it initially, that fucker STAYED with them.
Plus, it's just about the greatest closer on a Prince album, or at least up there with "Adore" and "Purple Rain". you can actually charleston to this song, ha ha. i figgered that out as a kid. this was the first prince album i ever bought - totally on the sly from my parents, in k-mart. i lost my tape years ago and must find another 'cause i keep thinking about it and wishing i could hear this or that song. annie christian was my fave at the time. sexuality is so dern cool tho. i love the way he reused it on TRC.
