Prince and Morrissey

2 of my favourite artists.

2 totally different types of music

Has either ever acknowledged the other?
How can a non-musician discuss the future of music
From anything other than a consumer point of view?

morrisey said of Prince that if he had been from (some english city) he would have been finished by now. That was years ago

Morrissey is one of my favorite artists too. I think it was 10 Years ago that i read in the NME that they have met and discussed a collaboration but nothing ever happened. Maybe it was just made up by some journalist.
I don´t believe they could ever get along with each other because of their big egos and musically they have not much in common. For example Morrissey often expresses his dislike for rap saying something like "I really don´t understand the fascination of rap music. Can somebody please explain in to me?"

If they collaborated my opinion on prince would fall. Morrissey doen't touch what prince can achieve.

That 'some english city' is in fact the Lancashire town of Wigan. Home of the great (The) Verve incidentally. Morrissey also was quoted as saying something about Prince of which I can't recall but began by saying 'Ponce, I mean Prince...' purposely. I find that amusing! Thus, any speculation of both of them collaborating is clearly tabloid fabricacy.

To some extent, I think it is easy to see why Prince irritated Morrissey. Prince being the outrageously, flamboyant showman. Morrissey, the shy, reflective social commentator dismissive of pomp and circumstance. Both very much defining figures of the '80s, but on completely different ends of the musical spectrum.

i cant see morissey living in Stretford again, how long can you celebrate misery?
the only part of the manchester pop ("ive made it") scene see is Halebarns, where i cant see morissey pondering on his slice of toast on a rainy Monday afternoon, watching some black and white film. Its a lifestyle he has milked lyrically to the student crowd and is still digesting to this day (all bow to the NME).

In a 1990 edition of Sky magazine with Prince on the cover Morrissey is quoted as saying "If he came from Wigan he'd be dead by now".

I know this because just the other day I discovered the magazine in a box in our garage!

I take it to mean that the flamboyant and fragile Prince wouldn't have survived wearing what he does on the mean streets of Wigan. Or rather it is Morrissey making out he's hard because he comes from a downtrodden part of England.

I wouldn't be surprised if Minneopolis is the American equivalent of Wigan anyway and he DID survive a rough up-bringing.

i know morrissey likes to talk shit about other musicians, but sometimes he really needs to know when to shut his fucking mouth. when boy george gets bitchy, there's a charm to it and it's entertaining - morrissey just comes off like a bitter hag.

I love these 2 myself, but I can't tell you about their feelings toward each other. But whatever they are, I'm sure they respect each other's work and legacy.

Prince might be a much better performer and much more talented composer but as a lyricist i find Morrissey far more interesting and substantial than Prince.Prince can be a very good lyricist too but he tends to be quite shallow from time to time.
I find myself listening to Morrissey´s new record "You are to Quarry" twice as much than to "Musicology".At least it has some really great melodies on it something that Princes output lacks a bit.

Yeah they were supposed to work together early 93 ,they had a mutual friend in the record business - Prince was waiting for Mozz at some grammys in LA but Morrissey didn't came because he was ill...
I've read that Johnny Marr and the others Smiths members were leaving Morrissey in studio and were going to club dancing to Prince's stuff during the last Smiths album recording
