The "What If?" Thread

On this site,we are constantly asking each other "What if Prince had done this?" or "What if he had released this song, instead of that song?" and so on.So,this thread is devoted to "What if" questions that you wanna discuss. To get the ball rolling,I'm gonna ask a few questions myself:

***What if Prince had never went to war with Warner Bros.? How do you think his career would have developed in the 90s? Just think,we never would have had that silly name change nonsense,we probably would have got better albums (it's obvious that some of his 90s' albums were just made to fulfill an undesirable contract obligation),and maybe his career would be in a different place today. What do you think?

***What if Prince had done like most artists, and released a new album every 3 years or so? Do you think he would have had more success by NOT flooding the market?

***What if Prince had never became good friends with Larry Graham? Do you think Prince would still be the same,sex-obsessed artist he was before?

So,let's discuss!

interesting questions.

* What if Prince had never went to war with Warner Bros.? How do you think his career would have developed in the 90s? Just think,we never would have had that silly name change nonsense,we probably would have got better albums (it's obvious that some of his 90s' albums were just made to fulfill an undesirable contract obligation),and maybe his career would be in a different place today. What do you think?

i think the music might have been better cause prince would have been more focused on the music than going on about being a slave 4 $100 million! i lot of people found this ridiculous (including me) and it did put some fans off.
4 instance, by the time TGE came out people/press had lost interest which was a shame cause it was his best album of the 90s (IMO). we also would have been spared those 'artist formally known as (insert unclever comment here)' jokes

* What if Prince had done like most artists, and released a new album every 3 years or so? Do you think he would have had more success by NOT flooding the market?

yes, i think he would have. not just due 2 fact that the market would not b flooded but also his quality control would have been better. hardcore fans could keep up with prince's material but other more casual fans kinda lost track (i know quite a few people who fell in2 this category)
also, when a new prince album dropped there would b more excitment and antcipation (think madonna)

* What if Prince had never became good friends with Larry Graham? Do you think Prince would still be the same,sex-obsessed artist he was before?

not sure about this. as some1 gets older they do tend 2 settle down and think about spiritualty/god more. perhaps prince would have toned it down but maybe not 2 the extent he has done.

If the answer to all these questions was "Yes" then Prince wouldn't have been Prince.

I think Prince could do with more control on his actual releases, but I don't think the longer wait is necessary. Yes, they MIGHT receive more attention, but so what. We wouldn't have got Parade, ATWIAD etc. (We also might have been spared NPS, but that wasn't a Prince/Symbol album. It was NPG so we'll let him off the hook. Take Radiohead - they "flooded" the market and withdrew from visibility simultaneously (low-key tours and videos) and yet have managed 2 maintain interest. Also I was reaching overkill some time after Amnesiac, I'm now hanging 4 their next release. On the other hand, take Red Hot Chilli Peppers. They waited ages after BSSM, and then their next release was a bit of a sleeper (altho I really like it), it was only Californication that brought them back and that's just because it's a duplicate of BSSM (it has some good tracks tho). So there r no hard and fast rules.

As 4 the LG question. Who knows? My guess is that he would've followed a similar poath with slightly different emphases (less JW reference! lol).

Great questions!

I think if Prince had a good relationship with Warner Bros, that his career would be similar to Madonna's, with many peaks of popularity. I think Warner would have promoted him much more, which leads to more album sales.

I think Prince's album sales would have increased greatly if he hadn't released as many albums and taken the MJ route. He could have easily made each album a huge "event" like MJ does. However, I'm glad he's too much of an artist to do that. I love that he's releasing so much, and even would like him to release more.

I really believe that Prince would be in the exact same mindset that he's in now had he not hooked up with Larry. I don't hold Larry responsible for Prince's religious leanings. In fact I'm a little surpised that people are blaming him. If you've followed Prince's career closely (which I know you all have!), you can see how he goes through many religious phases and then moves into more earthy and sexual phases. Look at the way he challenges his audiences on the Purple Rain or Lovesexy tours with his thoughts on God. I've always loved that about him. I don't share his views in religion, but I love his balance of the spiritual and the sexual.
