Prince - Good Rap/Bad Rap

Just wondering what songs out there have good rapping and which have bad...Lots round here say that rap on P records is Bad...I disagree. I happen to think a lot of it is good.

& Who's the culprit of the rapping?

Good - Y should I do that when I can do this - Prince

Bad - Lovesexy Cat Rap - Cat

So Bad it's Good - If a girl answers don't hang up - Brenda

Generally speaking Prince should stay far away from rap. But there are some out there that he did well with...and its more in Prince-speak than true rapping.

Irresistable Bitch
Bob George
Scarlett Pussy
Pussy Control
Release It (ok...Morris Day, but it might as well have been Prince)
Face Down

to name a few...

I think that rapping has a very loose definition and Prince has been doing it with success for a long time, with songs like Irreistable Bitch, Lady Cab Driver, Girls and Boys, P. Control, ect.

It's only consistently bad when he enlists others. Do I have to say any names? lol

I have found that P is quite adept at rapping. It's when he has others do it...it almost always comes across as contrived and phony. Whether it be Cat, Tony M or others. Even Shelia E..though the trans mississippi rap is pretty good.

Prince as a rapper SUCKS. Personally, I thought the Money Maker mix of "The Good Life" was okay, but thats about it.

I like his short little raps on songs like Gett Off or Love 2 the 9s, even his part on Jughead.
I like the whole of Dead on It, Irresistable Bitch.

Hate P Control, The Flow, Funky Design.

When he's being Prince it's fine, when he's trying to be a rapper he's pretty awful.

I really like Vanity 6's "If A Girl Answers (Don't Hang Up)". Although, technically, I guess you could call it rap, I've always considered it as what we used to call "doing the dozens". It's like throwing insults in a rhyme form.

I guess you could consider "Irresistable Bitch" as rap also. And I can also deal with Cat on "Alphabet Street". It may have been rap but it was still funky. You still had music behind it and it still had a nice tempo and was funky.

In the early 1980s, a lot of mainstream funk artists might have just a little piece of rap in their songs but it was done in a very funky way and it didn't dominate the whole record. For example, Teena Marie's "Square Biz" and Stacy Lattisaw's "Feel My Love Tonight". There are more but those are the first two to pop into my head. You also had rap groups in the early 80s but the songs were fun, the tempo was fast, and the songs were for the dance floor, where they belong. Songs like "Planet Rock", "Pack Jam", "Electric Kingdom", "Egypt, Egypt", etc. Most of the music was original and not sampled.

I hate once you get into the 1990s and rap takes over the airwaves. I could deal with rap at first. Even though the whole rhythm of the song was centered around a sample, the tempo was still for the dance floor with groups like 2 Live Crew, 95 South, Dis N Dat, etc. But how many times can you hear "Planet Rock" and "Egypt, Egypt" before you get tired of them. I hate it when gansta rap took over and the whole song was stripped to a sample and a drum machine. The tempo was too slow for the dance floor and too fast for the bedroom. So what the hell good is the song for...to listen to a story...hell, that's what TV shows are for not music. Music is for dancing. The whole hip hop culture is totally messed up. Instead of dressing like stars, they dress like hoodlums. They talk about being real a looking like everyone else on the street. My definition of a star is someone that STANDS OUT from the crowd, someone that does not look like everybody else....especially a lowlife hoodlum.

I hate it when Prince incorporated some of these things in this music with Tony M. in the early 1990s. I love the song "My Name Is Prince" but I hate the rap that Tony M. does in it. It sounds thuggish. I don't like "thuggish". Prince is an individual, not a "thug" and he looks ridiculous when he tries to portray one. On the new album, my least favorite tracks are "Illusion, Coma, Pimp, and Circumstance" and "Life Of The Party". He uses hip hop words like "mack" and "down with". Don't join the little devils...hell, try to beat them.

The majority of mainstream R&B on the radio today, even if it's not rap, it has that same down beat in the background but it has singing instead of rapping so I still consider it hip hop. It has that same midtempo beat, the majority of the singers dress like rappers, and they use the same hip hop slang in their lyrics.

The problem I have with hip hop as a whole is.....IT KILLED FUNK. It totally ran it out of style like new wave did to disco in the early 80s. I eventually learned to like new wave though because it sounded good. Hip hop is too damned SLOW. I want to dance, not listen to a damn juvenille deliquent's story! I get tired of pulling out my old funk records from the 80s because nothing new is coming out because hip hop ran it out of style and we haven't moved on to bigger and better forms of music because major corporations now run the radio stations and are keeping this "cheap" form of music alive so they can make mega bucks.

I don't like any kind of rap that Prince does that sounds like gansta rap because I am "STILL WAITING" for hip hop to go out of style so we can get back to jamming again. If not with funk, then with some new creation that at least SOUNDS GOOD and is MUSIC.
Andy is a four letter word.
