Buying Prince for my Nieces and Nephews...what's appropriate

The plan is to buy/send a P disc once a year to one of my nieces or nephews...they may not even understand what it's all about at first, but the hopes are that they will like, understand and appreciate what they have been getting all these years...and hopefully they will keep collecting.

The hard part was deciding which one gets the legacy of collection handed down to them..but then I started thinking at what age should I start doing this? The oldest one is 10/11. That's kinda young, but he's starting to get into music slightly. Also what album would be good to start them off? Something that they'll like but not too dirty. Or do kids really get what he is saying with stuff like soft and wet (any mom's or dads out there?) Are boys better to turn on than girls?

I was thinking of starting one of them at 15 yrs old and maybe with Batman to start or Musicology or maybe ATWIAD? Can younger kids appreciate him?

My kids love him! They're 5 and 9. I know my oldest does appreciate the music because I catch him listening to it when I'm out of the room. I'm not sure about my baby though, I think he is into it because I am but you never know. The funniest thing about it is they both have complete opposite taste in music. The 9 year old is into top 40,hip-hop and rap and the 5 year old is into rock.
I wouldn't start with ATWIAD if you're trying to get someone into Prince, you'll want something stronger. Maybe 1999 or Musicology. Or why dont you start with For You and work your way up to Musicology.

1999 immediately came to mind as it is very dancey and accessable. My only problem would be the lyrics from # 4 on..I wanna seriously *** the taste out of your mouth....not too sure on that...or Lady Cab driver... But when I think about it, it took me a while to even catch on that those lyrics even existed or to even get to the deeper meaning of those songs. Hell pocket full of horses didn't get me until very recently eek .

Thanks of rthe advice...like i said I am not even certain they'll even play him...but when they get disc number 12 on their 20th b-day maybe they'll notice or have a friend come by who points out to them just what they have. I get them all kinds of things they don't understand now, but will hopefull appreciate what they have in the future.

Is it OK with their parents? If they get into Prince they are going to have some pretty interesting questions. Their parents better be ready to have THE TALK with them. Hold off on Dirty Mind, Controversy, and 1999. IMO.

I let their Mom know (gently) this past weekend...just to see if it was ok. It is. I doubt even she knows about his music...my brother more so, but not really. I think they have no clue beyond PR and kiss.

I'm a bit surprised about the ages that the kids are getting exposed to P. A 9 year old gets the Symbol CD..I credit the parents on that one biggrin

I just have to remember kids are kids and if the music is fun and people are enjoying it aorund them, they will too.

Musicology
Around the World In A Day
Parade
Graffriti Bridge
Diamonds and Pearls
Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic
One Nite Alone (Piano) (Avalanche?.....mmmm, not sure about this one for young kids).
Batman

Any instrumentals...
MADHOUSE 8/16
NEWS
XPECTATION

I can't really see beyond this what would be appropriate for a child under 13..
But to each their own..

I just can't see a 10 year old walking around the house singing Sister or Come.

I think if you gave a kid a copy of the Parade album and the Batman soundtrack, it could rock their world.

In a good way, that is. smile

Batman is kid-friendly by its very nature. Musicology also. ATWIAD is alot to handle. Plus I wouldn't want to explain why Jr. is running around singing "working my body in a hot flash of animal lust".

If it were me I'd start by burning them something. Depending on the kids it would probably look like a cleaned up version of The Hits/The B-sides with some extra tunes thrown in (Walk/Don't Walk, Do U lie, Wherever U Go). Heck just look at Prince's current setlist (minus DMSR) and you've got a pretty kid-friendly compliation right there.

And yes kids do know when Prince is singing something dirty. At least I did. smile

Those are 2 I would probably get first...perhaps followed by Musicology. Batman as Uluv points out is vbery kid friendly...and I think the whimsy of Parade and it's french undertones is very kid friendly (sort of)...but I can see kids dancing to Mountians and not caring what it's about. Or Kiss. And the first part of the album is very fun. Not too much brooding or screaming...like ATWIAD does...as that one starts out fun but by the time the Ladder gets there and Temptation.

thanks. not a bad idea.

no one has mentioned LoveSexy...if the cover wasn't included or covered or does it even matter...it's tasteful and beautiful. It's a very playful and fun album and had a lot of imagry.

ok, yes you could start with batman, musicology, ect..... personally i would go for the scandalous sex suite, get them started young. I'm sure all die hard prince fans have learned a lot from prince and his lyrics. It is possible to make up an 80 minute cd of his "dirty" songs at least. Although batman does have some saucy lyrics on it.

How about none? Why not let them decide what music they want to listen to or receive as a gift?

It's not always appreciated, much like that cardigan Grandma always knitted you for Xmas.

just a thought.

In all honesty, I would rather give a child an album about oral sex and incest than one concerned with religious cult dogma.

I agree.
Prince has very few albums that a kid could actually digest.

Honestly, I first started digging Prince becuase he used profinity. It was thrilling for a kid who grew up in the represive 80's to hear it.

It wasn't until PARADE when I realized that he was actually a gifted composer too.

Buying a child a Prince album now would've been like me receiving my Parent's Elvis albums when I was younger--Yeah, he may be the king, but I wasn't exactly vibin' off of Jail House Rock growing up.
