Did anyone see Prince on Access Hollywood today?

Shawn Robinson had sort of a part two to her interview with Prince. The interview was done in a new location. She basically recapped the tour thus far. The concert has gross over 37 millon dollars on 40 dates. They expect him to play to 1.5 million fans by mid September in the US alone. They currently chart the album with over 2 million in sales. This includes the concert handouts. I like his response to Shawn's question of his challenge to "younger" performers to do more than just bump and grind:

"Well, putting the focus on the music, you don't have to do that. Bumpin' and grindin' is cool too, aint nothin' wrong with that! But at the same time you want to talk about something. It gets mind numbing to just dance all the time" - Prince

PS - Thank God for TiVo! lol

I definitely rejoiced at this comment. Just a few months ago, he was condemning all the empty booty-shaking sex songs ... it seems he's lightened up. Yea!

He didn't say anything judgmental in the interview this time. I was pleasantly surprised that he gave his support for "bumping and grinding" LOL!

Uh that's easy for you to say go all natural. If you can, more power to ya, but I know I can't.
I just got a relaxer yesterday because I was long overdue and I tell you aIf elt a heck of alot better. It always feels like I have a ton of bricks sittin' on my head. I can't do much with it until I add some chemicals to it. I imagine Prince feels the same way. Maybe that's why he's always keeping his hair did.

It's alright to be blessed with natural beauty, but there are some things that you have to groom up sometimes. Going natural can sometimes scare somebody the other way, including yourself.

rolleyes Super ignorant. So if a Black person has a kinky hair texture, they are not well groomed unless they chemically straighten it or better yet, they might scare someone the other way if they don't throw a relaxer or pressing comb up in it.

Ain't nothing worse than a self-hatin' Black person. Slavery did us in real good.. mad

I do find that there is a deficit of definitions of beauty in minorities. Asians regard round eyes as more pleasing, yet most of us have slanted eyes. I'm mixed so mine are round, but some of my Asian friends aren't and theirs are slanted. I even know Asians who are not "Americanized" and they prefer round eyes. I saw two horrifying CNN reports where the Japanese (and these are fully fledged Japanese in Japan-not your American Japanese flare) are getting surgery to have proper eye slits to look more European, and also perming their eye lashes to curve upward like Americans.

Anglo culture is very strong in minority culture and you see it everywhere. Pick up any minority magazine and the image that is exuded is one that is very white.

I spent time in Haiti when I was in the military, and there are two types of Haitians. Blacks and (these are THEIR words) Malattos. The light skin blacks only made up 10% of the population, but are considered the staple of beauty. They're the only ones on Haitian magazine covers.

Even Prince was guilty of this at one time, though I think he started to see the message it was conveying. Try and imagine all of the Prince videos before the Gold Experience. How many black women had prominent roles in Prince videos? Movies? By prominent , I mean, depicted and sexual provocative and intriguing. Nadda that I can think of.
To add injury to insult, consider UTCM, where the love interest was not only white, she was VERY white, and you had two black men fighting over her. And the scene where Prince is approached by an older woman looking for him to wine and dine her? Yup, an old, implied, ugly black woman. He screams frightened of her. These messages are subconsciously picked up by people.

20/20 had once conducted a test in which they had a room full of 6 year old girls, all black, and they asked them to pick out (from a row of multi-colored dolls) the prettiest doll. All the girls consistently chose the blond haired, blue eyed, doll over the other darker and black dolls--this scared me.

It makes it even worse when you have minority stars like Michael Jackson having to concoct lies about vitaligo to justify his absolute obsession with looking white. Every feature on his face has been altered to the Nth degree to conform with looking white. There is no way in hell anyone can convince me that MJ is the only person in recorded history with a case of "all-over-the-body vitiligo" that happened within 3 short years. He lightened his skin, he shrunk his nose, he thinned his lips, he dimpled his chin, he relaxed his hair, and on and on. What is an insecure child in hostile situations suppose to think when bombarded by singular definitions of beauty?

The only people expanding that definition effectively in America right now are Hispanics (the peuto Rican type), as evident in JayLo's popularity and in such toys as "Brats"--those Hispanic looking dolls that are taking a bite out of Barbie's fortune. I envy them. Because in a culture that has sought so desperately to snub them, their influence grows and grows. They've defined, (and yes--they have issues that we all face too), beauty and values on their terms, and the rest of America is starting to call that chic.

Defining beauty by the color of our skin or hair on our heads is a mind trap.

Beauty should be based on vaginas. All Vaginas have kinky hair, and look how much we love them!

Excellent post. People really don't understand the inferiority complex issues that so many people of color around the world suffer. What you described that occurs in Hait also happens all over the world, South America, India, Africa, Central America....the feeling that you are less beautiful because of your race. They still have caste systems in India..the darker you are, the lower your social status and the lighter you are, the higher your economic status.

You are so correct about P's past color issues. Those issues are actually why I fell out of like with him for over 15 years. Now that I am older, I have learned to except the fact that he is human and no different from the other millions of people, myself included, that suffer from the bombardment of images that say "if you are white, you're alright, if you're are brown, stick around. If you're black, get back." I have also learned to separate my feelings about P as a person from P the musician. I wished it didn't take me so long to do that, because it caused me to miss out on so much of his music. Playing catch-up ain't fun.. smile

While I do agree with the majority of your post, I must comment on this part. I don't want to even start about Michael Jackson cuz I don't feel like hearing all the debate. But I must come to his defense about vitiligo. First off, if anyone has paid attention to MJ, he has never claimed that vitiligo turned his skin COMPLETELY white. He and his make up artist have always maintained that his skin is blotched with white patches and they use white looking make up to give him an even skin tone. Some may ask, "well why doesn't he use brown make up to even himself out?" Well MJ vitiligo has worsened over the years. Back during the Thriller era he had vitiligo but he used brown make up to cover it up because the majority of his skin was brown with white patches. It was easier that way. As the disease worsened, he had to start using light make up because the white patches were becoming the majority of his skin tone. If he would have continued to use brown make up, he would have literally had to be covered in head to toe in make up, which is a big inconvienence...think about him touching or hugging people...brown make up would have gotten everywhere. The reason I feel so strongly about defending MJ is because my cousin has a bad case of vitiligo and she has to do the same thing MJ does...she puts light make up on to conceal the little bit of brown skin that is left. From years of seeing her struggle with it has given me a soft spot to MJ regarding this. A lot of people accused my cousin of wanted to look white. It's sad. She started going out with no make up so people would see how real her vitiligo was and stop accusing her of trying to blend in with the white asthetic that society has. I don't know how MJ feels on the inside, but I can bear witness that he does in fact have vitiligo....have you ever seen him live? If so, notice when he starts sweating a lot and his make up comes off a bit. You can see the brown spots on him. Anyway, I just felt like I needed to say that.

OK. But vitiligo didn't affect his hair, nose, chin, and lips.

for all the kudos folks are giving to what p said, seems like ya'll are overlooking one major part of the quote:
"[...]But at the same time you want to talk about something. It gets mind numbing to just dance all the time"

....that speaks a fuck of a lot more volumes to me than the bit about the bumping/grinding/whatever's clever. it's right on.

as for the bit about the hair and what-not: i've been thinkin about goin the natural route with my hair. ain't a damned thing wrong with that. not a thing. i've had my hair relaxed for some time now, and it's a pain in the ass sometimes to take care of. i gotta lotta hair ('bout the same length as ol' boy's was before he cut it) and the majority of the time i just have it pulled back in a ponytail. i don't believe in fancy-schmancy hairstyles. the main reason why i had my hair relaxed was mainly cuz it was more manageable to deal with, not for beauty's sake. now, i'ma give up on gettin my hair relaxed cuz it costs too damned much for one thing...secondly, i think it's time i had a bit of a 'fro goin as it is.
