Rick released a greatest hits called "Reflections" in 1984 with a decent hit called "17" (one of three new tracks on the album). Then Prince came out with "Purple Rain" and blew Rick off the face of the earth once and for all. It's like he dug a big hole in the ground and threw Rick in it and buried him alive!

THAT was one of the best summaries of the Rick James / Prince era I've ever read. Very well done. I remember only a few things about Rick back in the day: "Give it to me Baby" from 1981. "Fire and Desire" from 81. "Superfreak" from 83? The Mary Jane Girls. And the Glow video which was such a Purple Rain rip it was funny!

The next time I heard of Rick he was in the news for some drug-induced S&M torture trip with some woman. Anyone know more details about that? Rick did some time, didn't he?

AFTER RICK GOT OUT OF JAIL, HE WENT BACK TO TOURING AND HAD A HEART ATTACK OR STROKE AND GOT SOME REST FOR A YEAR OR TWO. NOW HIS BACK TOURING WITH TEENA MARIE THIS YEAR AND MY SISTER SAID THAT HE WAS GREAT SINGING FIRE & DESIRE WITH TEENA, BUT THE REST OF HIS SHOW SUCKED ASS!
I'M NOT SHOUTING, JEEZ!

Do Any of you Right ON and BLACK BEAT magazine readers remember that around the time of Street Songs ,Rick James was supposed to be working on a semi autobiographical Movie, sort of based around Street Songs and Teena Marie, The Stone City Band, Mary Jane girls, etc. were all supposed to be in it...they mentioned it in a few issues...then nothing ...A few months later, out of nowhere, now Prince is filming Purple Rain, a semi-autobiographical movie based around an upcoming album...

I loooove this thread...I was wondering when someone would talk about some reeallll old skool stuff.
Prince must have worked Rick James nerves because Rick is still mad. I saw some BET show about 3 years ago with Rick on a panel of guest. This woman asked him about the rift between He and Prince....Rick finally admitted to Princes genius, but he was still making nasty comments about his look, his sexuality, just real immature comments. He will always have ill feelings about the Prince..hilarious

Dez Dickerson said in his book, They had a real Alfa Male competition thing going on from the beginning. Rick would go out of his way to invite Prince and his band to hang out with him, but Prince would be lukewarm towards him or just snub him. Prince was very much trying to get Ricks R&B audience and in most cases he did so that also caused tension. The rest of the Revolution got along with Rick and his band for the most part, but Prince just kept to whatever his agenda was. Once Rick started being publically vocal about his dislike for Prince..Prince had Chick carry him around at one of Ricks shows in retaliation. I remember reading in Right On! mag or one of those teen mags Rick said Prince was rude to his mother and that was a serious offense. Of coarse there was the stealing Vanity incident at the American Music Awards.

Yeah, great post Vainandy. Don't forget that Rick put out the "concept" album "The Flag" after "Parade" came out. He had cut his hair and was wearing a leather outfit and kind of looked the way Prince did Parade-era.
Also, the show you were talking about a couple of years ago was on VH1, and it was called "The List" and Rick was a guest on it. Another guest had mentioned Prince or a Prince song, and Rick had a couple of comments about it. And then another person on the panel kissed Rick's butt by saying he was the King Of Funk.
Whatever the case, Prince pretty much stayed away from going overboard with the partying, and Rick didn't. And now 25 years later, Prince is very relevant and Rick is, unfortunately, just a Dave Chappelle skit(and yes I know Prince is too, but you know what I'm saying). I wish Rick would come back on the scene in a big way. His old stuff is truly classic. Maybe it would inspire the competitive spirit in Prince again.

I remember Rick talking about making that movie. It was going to be called "Alice In Ghettoland" and Teena Marie was going to play Alice. You mentioned Prince shortly after that filming "Purple Rain"....GOOD POINT. I don't know why I didn't make that connection until you mentioned it. I guess I was so excited with the "Purple Rain" mania at the time to make that connection. Also, Rick wasn't on my mind much that year because he only had a greatest hits album out that year.

Also, thanks to all the responses to my topic. I have been reading the responses to some of these topics like "What are your favorite Prince albums?" and people would respond with "Parade", "Sign O The Times", or "Gold" and I would think..."Where are the old timers?" I'm so glad to see there are some of us old senior citizens still getting around in our walkers. LOL

And that's the top reason Vanity left Rick and stayed with Prince biggrin

"Alice In Ghettoland" was the title, and Teena was 2 play Alice if I remember correctly. I also heard about Chick carrying P on his shoulders at Rick's concert. My girlfriend's older sister saw Rick in concert in New York and she said that P AND Andre walked through the crowd during Rick's show, taking the attention off of Rick.

"Super Freak" wasn't a top 10 hit in the U.S. Those positions are straight from Billboard magazine. Rick hit the top 10 producing other artists (Mary Jane Girls' "In My House" and Eddie Murphy's "Party All The Time"), but never had a top 10 single himself.

I hope I don't get in trouble 4 this but one of Rick's relatives, his neice (she told me this herself) a beautiful fair skinned mixed black female with long curly hair - slept with Prince (against Rick's wishes) and Rick preceeded to kick Prince off of that tour U guys mentioned.

Also, Prince refused to sign an autograph for Rick's mother. This is priveleged info so please cherish it people.

I've heard that story back in the day! Prince also stole Vanity from Rick at an American Music Awards show and Vanity left Rick that night(Rick is where Vanity got hooked on drugs),anyway isaw that tour in Cleveland....ZAPP,CAMEO,PRINCE,RICK JAMES all 4 just $25.00. Those where tha dayz baby, but anyway Prince kicked every1's ass that night and in the middle of Rick's set had Big Chick(bodygaurd) carry him thru the crowd on the floor and had people screamin at him rather that watch Rick. Rick lost his cool and was visably flustered. Girls where rippin off thier tops and flashin P it was off the hook. Like Chris Rock said...P won y'all P won!

But let's not get it twisted. Rick James is funky in his own right. I like Rick he was very talented and soulful. They had beef but P is a sponge and i know that when it comes 2 funk...P's a junkie so he was feelin Rick back in tha day and was influenced by him just like other funk bands from back in tha day especially Cameo even Bootsy's Rubberband. I love Prince to death and he is my alltime favorite but I can be objective. I think one lesson that Prince learned from observing Rick on that tour is the more outrageous the better. Prince was relatively tame before that tour. As soon as he steps off that tour, here comes "Dirty Mind". I could be wrong but I think Prince observed how the crowd reacted to Rick's outrageousness and discovered that he needed to find his own outrageous image for his next album and it definitely paid off.
