So Prince didn't make the AFI: 100 Greatest Movie Songs...

Sorry, I was on the Non-prince forum, and I decided to rant over here, too...
Info from The AFI( Thanks, Pusherman and TheAudience):

The American Film Institute (AFI) revealed the top movie songs of all time in AFI's 100 Years... 100 Songs

Other Winning Numbers Include Unforgettable Songs from BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S, HOLIDAY INN, THE GRADUATE, PINOCCHIO, THE WAY WE WERE, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER and THE SOUND OF MUSIC
The American Film Institute (AFI) revealed the top movie songs of all time in AFI's 100 Years... 100 Songs three-hour special television event hosted by John Travolta. Having contributed to the list himself-his dance moves helped SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER'S Stayin' Alive disco its way into a Top 10 spot and he made his own way onto the final list with his performance of GREASE'S Summer Nights-Travolta was a natural representative for 100 years of American movie music.

In the venerated #1 spot was Judy Garland's soulful and iconic rendition of Over the Rainbow from the beloved family classic, THE WIZARD OF OZ.

Nabbing the rest of the top spots were classics of every kind-from timeless favorites of yesteryear to contemporary tunes-including As Time Goes By (CASABLANCA), Singin' In The Rain (SINGIN' IN THE RAIN), Moon River (BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S), White Christmas (HOLIDAY INN/WHITE CHRISTMAS), Mrs. Robinson (THE GRADUATE), When You Wish Upon a Star (PINOCCHIO), The Way We Were (THE WAY WE WERE), Stayin' Alive (SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER) and The Sound of Music (THE SOUND OF MUSIC).

The Criteria

The jurors were asked to consider the following criteria while making their selections:

Feature-Length Fiction Film: The film must be in narrative format, typically more than 60 minutes in length.

American Film: The film must be in the English language with significant creative and/or financial production elements from the United States.

Song: Music and lyrics featured in an American film that set a tone or mood, define character, advance plot and/or express the film's themes in a manner that elevates the moving image art form. Songs may have been written and/or recorded specifically for the film or previously written and/or recorded and selected by the filmmaker to achieve the above goals.

Cultural Impact: Songs that have captured the nation's heart, echoed beyond the walls of a movie theater, and ultimately stand in our collective memory of the film itself.

Legacy: Songs that resonate across the century, enriching America's film heritage and captivating artists and audiences today.

No Prince, Huh?

A Great Overview!! Great List!!... However...

Not to bring Prince into everything, but
Purple Rain or Let's Go Crazy Should've been In there ...

Especially since they chose songs from 8 Mile, Fame, Do the Right Thing, Grease, Footloose and Dirty Dancing??
So people really voted for these and FLASHDANCE over Prince, huh? interesting...

So, "Time Of My Life" from DIRTY DANCING has greater CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE than any of Prince's soundtrack? hmmmm....

Kermit the Frog wailing"The Rainbow Connection " is MORE SIGNIFICANT than PURPLE RAIN?...ok...

So, Flashdance...What A Feeling will have more of a LASTING LEGACY than.....Nevermind!

I saw this yesterday and I just couldn't belive it. 'Purple Rain' won an Oscar and in my opinon was a 1000 times better than a third of this list. I will grant you that there are true classic songs listed here, but come now, 'Purple Rain' should've been listed.
pray God bless everyone. NO exceptions. pray

That is just wrong, dude. Does anyone even remember how that song from Working Girl goes? In fact, I don't even remember there being 'a' song from Working Girl, and I love that movie! mad

I can see Crazy and Doves getting passed over, but Purple Rain? 'Scuse me??? spank

The AFI list is illegitimate. Songs from Flashdance and 9 to 5 and 8 Mile make it, but Purple Rain, the imperial march from Star Wars, and the theme for The Godfather are omitted.

I counted at least 16 songs that could have easily been bumped for Purple Rain.

Prince WAS nominated - "Let's Go Crazy" was in the list of the Top 400 nominees (http://www.afi.com/Docs/t...ngs400.pdf) , but was not chosen to be in the Top 100. I think it's ridiculous too, especially when you consider that the stupid Muppet song was in there.

"Let's Go Crazy" set the tone of the movie, is a great song, etc., and appears to meet all the AFI criteria.

"When Doves Cry" IMHO was not integral to the movie. A better argument could be made for "Purple Rain" but I still think "Let's Go Crazy" was the best choice here. And so did the AFI since they nominated it.
