C.J. on Prince's MPLS/St.Paul Magazine interview.... Prince e-mails
Of course, Jayne Haugen Olson wondered whether the quotes were really coming from Prince. The Mpls.St.Paul magazine senior editor became the envy of journalists everywhere (wink, wink) when she landed a coveted E-MAIL interview with Symbolina. The e-terview format had everyone right up to magazine boss Brian Anderson curious about whether Prince himself answered the questions featured in July's Twin Cities pop culture issue. "Maybe I'm being Pollyanna here, but I've listened to his music for so many years, and I've read his liner notes and when I read those responses, which we ran as is, I believed in my heart it was him," she said. "This sounds like him. For how in control of Prince that he is, I don't think he would let anybody else" do the e-terview. "You now how he is with his music." Maybe a minion was in charge of typing in the answers ,which came with lots of his favorite shorthand: 2 = to; b = be, and stand 4 = stand for. Soooo high school. "You know, a couple of things [from high school] he just has not gotten over," said JHO, who is fine with Prince as is. "I think he's awesome. I'm a huge fan." No need to pressure JHO for Symbolina's e-mail address; their correspondence went through Ronnie Lippin, his tour manager. JHO got to ask eight questions; Symbolina responded to four. If JHO has read the Rolling Stone interview, she wouldn't have wasted energy typing personal questions, which are eschewed by Symbolina. The one personal question for which JHO begged an answer, however, was about his Minnesota residency. "At first [Lippin] said, No, he's not going to answer that," JHO said. "A day or two later, she said, 'Yes, he maintains his residence; no plans to sell it.' " Come on, Jayne, Symbolina wouldn't sell his home; he'd have it razed. "Good point," she said. (As some may remember, Prince leveled the Purple House, where his dad spent his last days, a gesture that showed little appreciation for history.) "So strange that no one stayed at the end of the Parade..." - Wendy & Lisa's "Song About" on their 1987 self-titled album.
