adonis and bathsheba

Has anyone heard that track (or is it two tracks). I remember reading about it in one of the Prince books but has it gotten out? How is it?

It isn't a circulating track - but obviously Prince, Eric Leeds and Susan Rogers have heard it - and Susan Rogers' opinion was not glowing.

I would love to hear it, I wonder what the lyrics would be like cause arent adonis and bathsheba like part of that whole greek or roma god circle

I think Susan Rogers said it was very cheezy, but Prince was really happy with it - so I also reckon it would sound like When 2 r in love - which I love! so f*** that engineer and release CB II!!!!!

Adonis & Batsheba

2 an orgy in a garden of flowers
Adonis & Batsheba flew
All of creation awaits them
As they dance by the crystal blue
Stream of desire and erotic rebellion
That parade through their hearts and minds
They look at one another as much as they don't
2 touch is their need
2 love they are blind
An abandoned gazebo houses what looks 2 be a perfect place
they undress as they re running
Batsheba crying
Adonis - sweat upon his face
4 them there is no morning
Only night decisions so grand
There is no bed, how will they ever
They decide 2 stand
No bed, they decide 2 stand
Adonis & Batsheba in a garden of flowers

It's a bit fanciful sounding - very Parade era. Balladish.

I thought it was neat, but even the person who played it for me dissed it. Apparently, Susan Rogers said it was a sappy, silly track and that opinion was transferred to everyone who subsequently heard it.

I've been meaning to post this over the last week or so but - for those who've already got their copy of 'The Vault'; not me, yet sad - there might be further info published there.

Anyway, here's what Uptown's excellent 'Turn It Up 2.0' (2001) has to say about 'Adonis and Bathsheeba':

'"It was sappy and just plain silly", says Susan Rogers of 'Adonis and Bathsheeba', which she describes as a syrupy and sentimental ballad. "I mean, there's romantic love and there's syrupy love - this was pure saccharine. The chorus went 'Adonis and Bathsheeba in a garden of love' and a harp came on.

I was sitting there as quiet as possible but I had a laughing fit and I just couldn't stop. And I was really embarrassed because I was sitting next to Prince and he asked "What's the matter with you?". I said, "I'm sorry, I just think the song is really funny". And he said, "You don't like the harp?". He would often ask us our opinion. I said, "I've got to be truthful, I think the whole thing is just silly. I just don't think it's worthy of your best work". He didn't like criticism but we didn't work much longer on it".

The swooning, yearning music of 'Adonis and Bathsheeba' is clearly intended to summon thoughts of romance, but the overall result is disappointing due to the bland and insubstantial melody as well as Prince's quivering, affected vocal delivery. The arrangement is cluttered and overwrought with strings, horns and other instruments competing for attention.

The song was tracked in Prince's home studio on July 27th 1986, shortly after he had completed the final version of 'Dream Factory'. Eric Leeds added a saxophone part on the same day. Prince appears to be fond of it as the lyrics were published in '10,000' magazine released in 1993 under his supervision. Furthermore, Eric remembers Prince commenting to him that he thought it was "one of the best lyrics" he had ever written. The song was one of the 17 chosen by fans during the 'Prince: A Celebration' week in 2000 for inclusion on a possible 'Crystal Ball Volume 2' album'.

Sounds quite interesting!

By the way, for those of you lucky enough to have 'The Vault' yet - does it go into more detail re: unreleased songs? And do any 'new' songs appear in the list that we haven't read about previously? I'm DYING to read it!!! razz

I only wish that I could. Some people are just awful.

I also heard: Cosmic Day, It Ain't Over Til the Fat Lady Sings, Everybody Wants What They Aint Got, Lust U Always, All My Dreams, Strange Way Of Saying I Love U, Moonbeam Levels...you know; all the stuff UPTOWN reported about and never circulated.

There were 25 tracks on the CDR.

why don't you post them. I have All My Dreams and Moonbeam levels but don't have the other ones. If you have these, you should be giving them out for free don't you think? Prince even said he wanted his music to be free so start giving baby! lol.

I've read about alot of unreleased songs in UPTOWN (and there are alot of them in The Vault book). No wonder they know their stuff. you should write for them since you have such great connections!

I thought I made it clear that I was never given these tracks. I don't have them.

Funny you should say that about writing for UPTOWN. Per emailed me out of the blue at the beginning of this year to ask if UPTOWN could run my review of the Fanily Jamm in their final issue. It wasn't published but I was jazzed to be asked.

Hey don't worry about it. Even if you do have them and don't want to give them out, that is your business. I was just giving you some crap! hahaha. It is cool that you've heard some of the songs we've been waiting for. You must have some incredible connections (you lucky bastard! hahaha)

Who is Per? Is that code fror Prince or something? How was the Family Jamm concert? I thought I saw a review in UPTOWN so maybe it did get published after all. You should check it out. I remember it being very detailed and informative (with some great backstage info-but that is what UPTOWN is good at). Good job!

don't take offense about us wanting to hear the songs you've heard. Hopefully we'll be as lucky one day to hear them too.

No, I totally feel you guys on that. I want to hear them again. On headphones. In my own room. I honestly don't have them. It's very frustrating.

I dont think its that cool that he's keeping the songs from us. If youve got them then you should let all of us hear them. iit is totally uncool to think that because you were special enough to have them you shouldnt share them with everyone. Whats up with that? Am I right or am I right!

Seriously just because someone has heard them or even has thme why tell us about them? It only makes it tougher for me and I bet alot of others when someone talks about hearing them and then not even sharing them with everyone. I dont want to sound like a dick but since you probably have them you should get them out to everyone. Or at least get them and get them out to everyone. Lie to the connection you have and get them and spread the wealth man. Id do it if I was as connectded as you are.

were all fans here and when someone rubs our noses in it it hurts us alot. why not give them to everyone so we all can enjoy what you and your freinds already have. talk about selfish.
