I know this DJ who happens to be a lesbian working in a gay club whose clientele is exclusively male. Recently, she graciously gave me a copy of a remix of Love Is the Drug, as performed by Madame Grace Jones. Right after giving me the cd-r, she played the remix, then a light remix of Erotic City. Needless to say, I was very pleased.

To thank her, I need to compile a cd of dance-oriented Prince songs. Everything is on the table -- Prince and associated artists, official releases and bootlegs, covers, etc. It has to be funky and sexy, and a touch of humor is quite appropriate. She is not a Prince buff, so it would be wise to stick to the Prince most people know -- the satyr of yore, author of the timeless Sex Shooter and Irresistable Bitch. No "Pussy Control", thank you, but Vibrator might work.

Gay men love house music. Look for anything that has been remixed by either Ultimix or Hot Tracks records. I have an excellent house mix of "When Doves Cry" a friend burned for me, I don't know what company remixed it.

As for original versions of Prince songs, look on the "Emancipation" album. There are two tracks on there called "New World" and "The Human Body". From the "Come" album there is "Loose".

There is also a tribute album called "A Tribute To Prince Party O The Times". This album contains 13 Prince hits that were rerecorded by other artists. A song that gay men would really love would be Loleatta Holoway's version of "I Wanna Be Your Lover". I have played it for many of my gay friends that could take Prince or leave him and they love it. Gay men love Loleatta Holoway anyway because she did "Crash Goes Love", "Ride On Time" with Black Box, and "Good Vibrations" with Marky Mark. These used to be major hits in the gay clubs.

I have been going to gay clubs for years and I even DJ'd for one for a few months. I can tell you from experience, if it's not house music, they are not going to respond. If you play the original version of "Controversy" or "Let's Work", the only response you will get will be from the die hard Prince fans in the club, which won't be many. For mass appeal, it has to be something housed up.

I agree on the overall taste. It's very tiring to go to gay clubs because every damn song has the same basic beats and breaks -- high hat on the 2 and 4, and the requisite descending chords on the break, followed by a short silence and big whoosh back to the basic beat. The only difference is the crackles and pops and of course the vocals. Luckily that DJ likes to break the monotony, hence the lovely Love Is the Drug remix and spinning Erotic City as is.
