Covers

Does anybody else find it kind of dissapointing when Prince does covers of other people's songs? To me, it seems as though it should be the other way around. He is such a talented musician, and to have him waste his time using other people's material seems like a waste of his talent. Maybe it's his pathetic attempt at gaining fans of other artists, such as Sheryl Crow (Everyday is a Winding Road and Joan Osborne (One of Us). Anybody else find this interesting?

I feel that he is doing too many covers on this One Nite Alone tour. He has at least three cover songs, and maybe more, in his current setlist.

Playing that many covers is cool at an aftershow jam, but people at his shows want to hear Prince music, not the Ohio Players, Erykah Badu, or Stevie Wonder.

In concert it can be cool, although he should keep it to a minimum. I mean he has such a huge catalog to pull from.

On albums I can definitely do without the covers. If he's low on new material ( which I doubt), I'd rather him pull from the unreleased stuff.

It depends what the song is I guess. Like One Of Us, and Every day is a Winding Road were just total garbage, but something like A Case Of U is fine.

With the exception of "A Case Of U" I have been roundly dissapointed by Prince's covers. The problem with his covers is that he tries 2 take songs that are relatively simple musically and turn them in2 his own compositions, which are usually far more complex. The result is songs like "Winding Road," which was overdone 2 the point of being ridiculous. One of my least favorite songs from anyone. I understand that he does covers of Sly, The Stylistics, etc., because these are the people that influenced him, and whenever I have heard Prince do a rendition of a Blues staple or a classic funk jam I get chills. Whenever he covers his contemporaries, I tune out.

Yeah, I hear were everybody is coming from. But... Sing A Simple Song absolutely rocked the house in Columbus, and I wasn't even looking forward to hearing that one. But when I heard how tight the band was I was like "whoa"... I didn't know it was going to rock like that!

I think one of the reasons why Prince is relying on covers so much on the ONA tour is because he knows that he's playing a lot of his newer material which a lot of people don't know and in the case of Xenophobia or Avalanche people couldn't have known before hearing it played live. It seems to me that Prince is intentionally staying away from the hits from his own music. Even though he has tons of other material from previous albums that were not hits that he could play, my guess is that he probably feels that including the covers adds a little more familiarity to his show for the "casual" fans.

On top of all that, I think he's carefully chosen certain covers out of respect for the artists who created those songs.

I really liked "One of Us." I hated the original, but Prince made it his own. LALALA ws OK, I Can't Make U was cool as was the Betcha By Golly. I like it when he does covers but live I don't need to hear any covers. He could play all night of his music and still have stuff to play. Why bother with any covers?

I just realized something: Prince has cover songs from SIX different artists in his One Nite Alone setlist. That is waaaaay too many covers.

Ohio Players -- Love Rollercoaster
Erykah Badu song
Stevie Wonder number
Joni Mitchell song
Santana medley
Sly and the Family Stone

I don't understand this. Why so many covers?
