Prince as the measuring stick? I was just listing to "All My Dreams", "Old Friends 4Sale(original version), and "Dear Mr. Man" and now I can see why Many people feel as tho it (Musicology LP, a great album IMO) is below the "Prince" standard. I have noticed for along time that critics and public alike don't really compare Prince to anyone but himself (not including the Prince wannabees...A3000, D'Angel, Maxwll etc) Let's face it the dude is the measuring stick for PoP music since like 1982. He is the BMW of the music world. What he must do to accomplish a true come back (like it seems as tho many really want, sorta like Christians and the second coming of Jesus...Hey is he the music Messiah? well is he?) is to produce pretty much a 1999/PR/SOTT type LP (1999=influence, PR=Sales, SOTT=absolute Brilliance) Prince was a superstar by a fluke. It's know way that this guy was ever meant to be a music superstar in the mix the way it was. In other words if one takes a look around the biz very few musical genius are ever considered superstars.
By current record sales standards Hendrix and Dylan could not have been considered superstars IN THEIR DAY (Not including their catologue sales over the last 35 years) It was always my opinion that Prince was an enigma, perhaps a contradiction in to himself in that he always wanted to be a MAINSTREAM/UNDERGROUND artist. This is a contradiction, but he has successfully pulled it off in a way that no other artist that I know of has ever. He is officially the most bootlegged artist ever (over even the Beatles) yet he has sold more than 100Million records legit (having been apart of the system with WB), won many musical awards and recognitions, and has the respect and admiration of almost every musician or entertainment personality I've ever heard speak of him (cept Rick James) His ideas are cutting edge. Out of everyone of his peers from the 80's superstar group he was the first to takes production to a organized effort (Paisley Park Records) This idea of distributing records at concerts and including them in the Billboard numbers in ingenious. As for him forcing the public into buying his records...come on what the hell do you think RADIO/PAYOLA has done for the past 60 years of rock n roll. You don't seriously think that if record companies had not paid radio to play the hell out of the New Kids on the BLock/Backstreet Boys/N'Sync (they are the same group aren't they?) and Britany in the beginning of there very expired and non-artistic careers that people would have really been out buying their records. Come on it's called "Suggestive (nicely forcing) Marketing". Let's take Outkast for instance first of all The Love Below is a remake of sorts of SOTT. Not word for word, but certainly the essence of and concept that was SOTT. The difference being that SOTT was, although influenced by past genius, still original. It could be easily argued that Andre2000 is the next incarnation of Prince, but truth be told we will have to wait and see. Lord knows there have been many attempts by record companies and the masses to crown a new "His Royal Badness" with as yet no success. Here's a list of dethroners who were talented but could not pull off a true coup... Terence Trent Darby George Michael Georgio Al B. Sure Devante Swing R. Kelly Beck Neneh Cherry Lauryn Hill Wyclef Jean Kurt Cobain Babyface Maxwell D'Angelo Teddy Riley Puff Daddy Jamouriqua No Doubt Macy Gray Alicia Keys Jill Scott Eryka Badu hell even Joshua Scott Chasez WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF good nite and yeah I did take this from other threads I've post over the last couple of months

(Georgio? ) But most...anyway.. The more and more I read up and see and hear...I think P is in a place all by his own. You give him good props...but he is in a very different place that these quite talented individuals. I think the biggest thing about P is OUTPUT. Sheer and utter output. It places him beyond the others just by that alone. He also has an inane talent to put sound in his head to fruitation. Christian Zombie Vampires

What kind of a fucking list is THAT? Oh, sure why don't you add James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and Herbie Hancock there as well...
