I won't get my hopes up. Every time he has talked to guitar magazines or bass magazines in the past, they asked him guitar-related questions and he replied talking about God and shit like that. C'mon Prince, you moan that people are only now realising you are a musician, yet when you get a chance to talk to fellow musicians in interviews you talk about any old shit except fucking music.
Why not: - Show off your guitar collection - Talk us through your stage and studio setups, what gear you're currently trying out etc - Talk about your favourite guitars, guitarists and favourite guitar solos - Shit like that, funk music, left hand technique, whatever That's what people who read "Guitar Player" and their ilk wanna hear... I suspect that he lacks the technical speak to explain what he means so he just avoids the questions.
I cant explain it but he never answers technical questions directly. In fact, he never answers questions about songwriting directly either i.e does he start with beats, melodys, lyrics etc? He's a fucking mystery wrapped up in a riddle. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

I bought the Prince issue of Guitar Player three weeks ago for $5.99! Save your money--not worth the price. He doesn't discuss his gear. There are some good pix. Here's one. He doesn't have to discuss gear since it's already listed in the article. Just as it was the last time he was featured in GP mag. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

The only problem I had with the article was that Prince put Beyonce in the same sentence with Ella Fitzgerald She's nowhere close to Ella's level. Four strings across the bridge. Ready to carry me over,Over the quavers, drunk in the bars,Out of the realm of the orchestra

Actually, it's not. It's the July issue. It may have been on the market for a few weeks, but this issue isn't old. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

i think some of you all are confusing this with the rhonda smith cover of bass player magazine w/ prince on the cover with her. this may have been out on newsstands for a while (though i can't find it ANYwhere in chicago yet), but it certainly hasn't been out for "months"....prince mentioned this story in a radio interview the day musicology came out, that might be another factor people are getting the actual magazine confused with...

No. I picked this magazine up almost a month ago. It may be the July issue, but that's not uncommon. Many times magazines put a cover date that is a month or two ahead to insure more time on the stands. You can still find it on most stands, but it isn't all that new in magazine terms. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

i don't think Prince wants everyone to know all of his secrets, because i sincerely doubt he lacks the ability to get all technical. he may have taught himself to play instruments, but he also prides himself on knowing how to read and write music. Prince doesn't strike me as the kind of person to just start babbling about all his behind the scenes effects. he doesn't want anyone to start trying to duplicate his sound and techniques.

This issue did come out about a month ago... Prince says he doesn't want to get into how he creates his "sound" because he feels it's more important for individual players to develop their own sound rather than try to copy his. I think he has a valid point there. What difference does it make how he does it? Develop your own.. There are too many copycats as it is!
The article doesn't really add a lot of insight beyond what I've seen posted on the org. It does, however, have a couple of cool shots of him playing various guitars.

Prince has divulged very little in the few intances where he's been covered in the guitar press.
How he still manages to get cover billing is beyond me. I'd actually rather read about a lesser known guitarist, who actually offers some real insight into their craft. The current article in Guitar player has some nice pics, but is pretty meager otherwise. I respect Prince's varied opinions, but mentioning Beyonce & Ella Fitzgerald in the same breath sounds a little weak to me. As you mature as a guitarist/musician hopefully you realize that emulation is pretty much a dead end, and deveolping your own voice on your instument is the most important thing. I gave up on my quest to "sound like" or "play like" so & so a long time ago. Though I do backslide from time to time. I'm mystified how, let's say Jesse Johnson for example comes out with a really guitar intensive album & gets virtually no coverage in the guitar press. There are alot of really good good musicians with cd's just "under the radar" that deserve more coverage.

I added this issue to my collection a couple weeks ago.
One thing he mentioned was about the way the guitar player from the 70s group BOSTON played his guitar. He also mentioned a couple obscure groups from that era as well. He gave nice mention to Ike Turner also. The Boston mention makes a lot of sense to me. I got back into BOSTON some a couple years ago. When I did I thought the guitar playing sounded like Prince~ Check it Out~
