What song kept Raspberry Beret from number 1?

I love "Raspberry Beret" and I can't believe it didn't make number one.

Anybody know what kept it from the top spot?

Here's the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 for the week ending July 20, 1985:
1."A View To A Kill," Duran Duran
2."Raspberry Beret," Prince & The Revolution
3."Everytime You Go Away," Paul Young
4."You Give Good Love," Whitney Houston
5.Sussudio," Phil Collins
6."The Search Is Over," Survivor
7."If You Love Somebody Set Them Free," Sting
8."Glory Days," Bruce Springsteen
9."Shout," Tears For Fears
10."Would I Lie To You?," Eurythmics

The following week, "Everytime You Go Away" jumped to number one and "Raspberry Beret" dropped to no. 7.

So to answer your question, Duran Duran's "A View To A Kill" kept "Raspberry Beret" from number one.

And just so ya know, "Purple Rain" was held at no.2 for two weeks by Wham!'s "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" eek and "U Got The Look" spent a week at number two behind Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam's "Lost In Emotion."

And for the super-curious, Prince had three no.3 hits ("Sign 'O' The Times," "Diamonds & Pearls," and "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World").
Here's what kept each of them from the top two:

April 25, 1987
1."I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)," George Michael & Aretha Franklin
2.""Don't Dream It's Over," Crowded House
3."Sign 'O' The Times," Prince

February 15, 1992
1."I'm Too Sexy," Right Said Fred
2."I Love Your Smile," Shanice
3."Diamonds & Pearls," Prince & The NPG

April 30, 1994
1."Bump N' Grind," R. Kelly
2."The Sign," Ace Of Base
3."The Most Beautiful Girl In The World," prince

"TMBGITW" spent two more weeks at no.3, and was held out by "The Sign" back at no.1 and "Bump N' Grind" at no.2 both weeks.

Nice research. Thanks for the answer. I don't have a problem with most of them but Shanice? Right Said Fred!? Gosh, I forgot how crappy the early '90s were for music!

Thanks for posting the info!
that was a tough week for me in 1985 because
Raspberry Beret & A View to a kill were my two
favorite songs at the time!
I wanted both of em to be #1!! sad giggle

You forget that D&P ,Sign,7(2 for 4 weeks),& TMBGITW were all #1 on every other chart BUT Billboard . U Got The Look was # 2 for 4 weeks and was leapfrogged by 2 other songs to #1 .This was a strange occurance on the Billboard charts.

I think Prince has had more top 3 hits that never hit #1 than any other artist .
Maybe someone can look this up.

Nice! Those were the days. 6 of the US top ten by British Artists.

Did British artists get shit, or did the US charts fall victim to the US corporate record companies?
