Sinead's version IS the original.....

Prince recorded it AFTER.....

Although he did play snippets live.....

I thought the original was done by The Family..confuse

To Purplecharm: You're right.

To his MiRRoR: Wrong! The Family recorded the song first, but it wasn't a single, therefore it wouldn't be a hit either. Sinead came out with it second a few years later and it was ah ight
even it was a major hit for her.

Prince and Rosie Gaines version. The best version out of all three. It can't be topped.

I'm probably the only one who remembers this cover.
Rainy Davis - Still Waiting. She even had a video to the song.
It was ok.

now his remake of She's Out Of My Life is the best Michael Jackson remake i ever heard.

What? Prince remade MJ´s She´s out of my life?? When? What album?

One of the worst remakes I've ever heard was by Tina Turner. She sang "Let's Pretend We're Married" and completely butchered it. She also changed some of the more explicit lyrics. Her version has no feeling; no sexuality to it...completely dead.

I don't know what was worse- that Rebecca Romijn-Stamos "sang" Darling Nikki or that her husband John produced it. Either way, it's a vortex of suckage.

I'm proud to say that I've never heard it. And never will, God willing!

Clearly no-one here has had the "pleasure" of hearing Billy Bragg's live re-working of Purple Rain into the more "environmentally conscious" 'Acid Rain'.....

It's out there on Kazaa, if you dare to hear a truly awful remake. (Although, I admit that hearing Mariah pointlessly warble "Baby, baby, bay-bayyyyy-eeee-ayyy-eeeee-ayyyy-aya-ayyy" is pretty egregious.....!)

Hey everybody. This'll be my first post, after lurking about for a bit. I actually had an org account back in 2001/2002 sometime, but only posted a small handful of times. Since I couldn't remember my account name or e-mail that I signed with I just started over. razz

Here's my take on some of the remakes, good and bad:
I Feel For You - Chaka Khan -- one of my fave remakes done by one of my fave artists
When You Were Mine - Cyndi Lauper -- another I love due, I'm sure, to the fact that I love Cyndi Lauper
When Doves Cry - Ginuwine -- no doubt for me, the worst Prince remake ever
If I Was Your Girlfriend - TLC -- not so keen on this one. I don't like T-Boz's voice, and the fact that it was sung by a woman took away some of the intrigue of the gender-play of the song for me.
How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore - Alicia Keyes -- not a fan. I like her, but don't like this song on her.
Private Joy - LaToya Jackson -- i've never had the pleasure of hearing it, but speaking of bad Jackson family remakes...
I Feel For You - Rebbie Jackson. bad remake from the Centiped album, an otherwise enjoyable piece of cheese
Do Me Baby - Meli'sa Morgan -- I really love this one. I remember hearing it quite a bit on the radio when I was younger. I like it nearly as much as the original wink It's done in a different style, but it works and it fits her voice well.

Enough already...

I had the dubious pleasure of seeing Mr. Bragg perform "Acid Rain" live with the Beatnigs (anybody remember the Beatnigs? they were Michael Franti's first band, notable mainly for their use of power tools as musical instruments.)

Billy did not make rock n' roll history that night.

barenaked ladies - live acoustic when doves cry
tori amos - purple rain.

otan - life can be so nice - I loved it... and take it from my member name, i love that song.

Don't hate me, but I like Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares To U" more than P's. She puts an emotional punch to it that Prince somehow lacked. I'm not putting the man down...its just a preference.
I also agree with Tom Jones' version of "Kiss". It sucks on ice.

I cosign this whole post. Sinead Oconnor's version sounds so dayum sad and forlong.... I mean you can hear how much she misses her love. Prince sounds like he is telling a story of how bad things are since his love left... Sinead is trying to plead to get him to come back.

also, Melissa Morgan did a decent job of do me baby.... not that I would have ever TRIED to cover that song, since after Prince did it... well he owned it in every way. But she was not bad.

4)IF I WAS YOUR GIRLFRIEND BY TLC (WOMEN AREN'T SUPPOSE TO SING THIS SONG )

agreed, it isn't supposed to be song by a woman but I really like the way Laface slowed the tempo. It gave it a real funky sound.
One of my faves on that album... and T-Boz has that in your face sexual confidence that Prince has.. she hit it on the head... it's just the lyrics is about a man saying something so outrageous as being a "girlfriend" to display how desperate he is to monopolize all of his woman's time.

I hope I don't get shot for this one... but Chaka OWNS this one. Not just her singing but the production... "fleshed it out" if you know what I mean.
Although I thought the rap was a little cheezy... but at the same time, I still will sing "chaka khan, chaka khan, cha -cha- chaka" kind of sticks in your head.

I think it has to be Kiss by Tom Jones.

What about the cover of Adore by Joe Roberts from '94. Anyone remember that?

I'm happy 2 say alot of these I've never heard and hope and pray I never ever do! Not 2 many people can pull off covering a Prince tune, except "maybe" Stephanie Mills version of "How Come U don't Call Me Anymore?" Really not 2 bad. That's the only 1 that did a Prince song justice n my opinion.

I think they are talking about Ginuwine's version of She's out of my Life which is on his second CD and in my opinion it is not the best MJ remake. Ginuwine's voice just isn't all of that.
