I've noticed most people really dig Lovesexy..

I just dusted it off after 3 or 4 years and had another listen. It worked a dream with the Black Album, I really like that now. But Lovesexy is still my second least favourite after Rave. It's just not coherent enough.

Apparently you missed the boat, cause the "trip" was the best he ever took us on!

I really feel bad for anyone who is barely discovering Lovesexy now, and/or missed it back in the 80's. If you are just discovering this great CD in the past few years... you missed out on everything. The impact it made at the time it was realeased in '88, the videos... God forbid anyone call themself a fan or fam if you missed the Tour! He has yet to put on a better show. If it was before you were born, you're excused.

Otherwise it just boils down to you either getting it or not.

I do agree that the tour was probably the best I've seen. It was like a punch to the solar plexus. In a good way...

The album? Well.....

A few good songs, along with one of his most essential (Anna Stesia). But overall the album is underwhelming to me. Especially considering the hype around here about it.

Should I blame my parents for not letting me go? I do have a live cd from Germany that is fabulous. The album itself was automatically one of my favs when I 1st bought it. From start to finish it IS a trip. The 12" versions are great too, def my favorite of his 12".

Anna Stesia is one of the greatest songs ever written by anyone, but as far as the "hype" around here... I still think it's because we were there.

I was at the wrecka stow, May 10, 1988, picking it up. I saw the "World Premiere" of the Alphabet St. video on MTV. Glam Slam and I Wish U Heaven videos followed. Sheila E. and Dr. Fink were on Video Soul with Donnie Simpson. I met one of my best friends camping out in line for tickets to the November 3rd show in Denver.

I mean, we were in the trenches with him on this one. The public basically shunned him, but we were rocking out in a half full arena. And he still gave his all in that show. I'm telling you... some people really missed the whole experience when it came to Lovesexy.

I probably wouldn't like it at all, if I never heard it, then discovered it in the 90's or even 2000's and heard it for the first time. It was all about the timing with this one.

I appreaciate all his work, but Lovesexy is still the one... 'til my day is done!!!

16 years after the fact, some just don't think it's one of his best albums, just like TRC for some people. For those who do, more power to ya. But obviously there is no consensus about any albums in his catalog, even if a large percentage like or dislike it.

I tend to chalk up Lovesexy as one of his best because it was the last Prince album that felt like a "Prince" album. It was the tipping point before he started caring about how others perceived his music. This was the last album where he didn't follow a trend. Musically, it isn't his best piece of work. My personal favorites are Eye No, Alphabet St, Anna Stesia and Dance On. The rest isn't that great, but it works well with the theme of the LP.

LOVESEXY is the shit!big ups to the person who said this record os the last record before prince started caring what people thought. so f'n true. this IS my fave record of his (SOTT runnin' close behind) and as far as it not beeing 'coherent enough'? I think this is one of the MOST cohesive albums p's ever done. why do you think he didnt break it up into tracks? you cant take this record apart. take the whole of it, man. This record doesnt sound like ANYTHING.period. the rhythms, structures, everything. Put "Galm Slam" next to "hot Thing" ,for instance, from his previous record and you realize the true adventurousness of this artist. Also, throughout the record there is running themes and terms which are only meaningfull and alive in the utopian universe Prince creates in the LOVESEXY album. "Spooky Electric" "Lovesexy""Glam Slam" all run throughout the whole album. I also agree that this record had the greates 12" too. ("I wish U heaven" being my fave. his whole alterna-'housequake' take "FISHTALE! ") and I also was lucky enough to sit row 4 center in the LA Lovesexy show in'88 and it is definitely the Prince concert that I compare all other Prince concerts to.
I apologize for this lengthy rant, but, when I hear people not getting this album it gets me so damn worked up!! I must convert you all!!! (knock knock)Say, I have something right here for you ma'am that I'd love you to take a look at....take this free "Watchtower" pamphlet....

Story for you here. I was 9 when it came out and I wanted it when it was released, even with the controversy with the album cover. I got it when I was visting my relatives in Jacksonvile, Florida. That was the period when I started to take Prince seriously (I heard and saw Purple Rain and fell in love) so getting Lovesexy at the same time was my first overload of Prince. I thought it was weirder than the last 3 albums I had before this one (SOTT, ATWIAD and Parade) but I liked it and was intriged by it. In October 88, Prince came to MSG in NYC and I wanted to go but I knew that my mom or anyone else in the family wasn't going to take me. A few months later, I met a girl who worked at my Grandma's job who saw the concert and she said it was great.
I got the CD in 99 and I REALLY liked the album even more and it stopped being weird because I finally understood it, especially Anna Stesia. This is a great CD, one of his best. You can tell that he was in great spirits in making this album. I like that it continued to be an album that didn't sound anything like the last album that was released before it. It was and is a Prince classic. biggrin
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I worked at a big corporate "record" store when LoveSexy came out... We had the album-cover in a promo display in the front of the store... and I remember one day hearing a kid say "#%@+! Who the hell would buy THAT?!"

I'd wager most Prince fans under 30 hopped on board during the D&P/prince period with the "Gett Off" video and all that MTV hype. Prince didn't play anything from LoveSexy in the early 90s tours.

Batman era 4 me, but yeah still too late. I would have liked to have experienced PR, SOTT and ofcourse LS. In fact I kinda envy those fans who've been there from the start. But hey at least now musically he's better than ever b4.

After that he became pretty much a caricature of himself, and his subsequent releases took a huge deep dive for the lowest common denominator.

I really LOVE all the albums through "Purple Rain" until he changed his style. "Around The World In A Day", "Parade"...his worst album ever, and "Sign 'O' The Times" were all disappointments. But I think "Lovesexy" is the best album he did after "Purple Rain". It reminded me a little of his second album, "Prince". For a minute there, it looked like he was going to go back to his old style...something I have always said he needs to do since 1985 and I still say it to this day. Stop experimenting with these different music styles and get rid of the horns, jazz, hip hop, and bring back the futuristic synthesizers!

LoveSexy is 1 of my favorites. It's good because its weird and different. AnnaStesia, Glam Slam, Positivty yes, eye Know, and Alphabet Street are all the bomb. Wasn't Prince weird and different back then? That's the point. I missed being able 2 discover this in the 80's. I didn't even know what it was when i saw it, but that picture on the cover caught my eye. I'm glad I got it when I did.

Lovesexy is classic not because it contains the best songs Prince ever recorded, but because it's a sincere document of a personal struggle. It is musically riveting but certainly not an attempt at a pop album. Prince was stretching his legs and letting go.
