Prince: Exodus

Yep. That's "Prince: Exodus" instead of "NPG: Exodus".

I listened 2 the album again 4 the 1st time in a long while after I read that Vanessa Mae will be contributing 2 the new album "Xenophobia".

I know it ain't her playing on "Hallucination Rain" but it's the only Prince song I know that has electric violin on it, so....

And listening 2 the album again -which is just fine by the way- I still can't help feeling a little sorry that Prince didn't take the lead vox on them trax like he did on NPS [which was also credited 2 B an 'NPG' album].

Yeah, I know, he was still under contract with Warners at the time so he probably had 2 make some compromises 2 get the album out at all.

Overall it's a decent -ok ok, a GOOD- album, if U can find the songs inbetween the segues smile

I know that songs like "MAD" and "FUNKY DESIGN" were considered 4 the album at some stage, like "SUPERHERO" and they're all floating around on boots or otherwise in 2 versions. 1 with Sonny on vox and 1 with Prince.

So I was just wondering if any of the other songs are also out there with Prince on lead vox.

Trax like "Count The Days" or "The Return O The Bump Squad"
which are amongst the coolest stuff of the last decade....

Hmmmmm, perhaps that'd be a cool thing 4 that "best of
0(+>" album.

I liked the 'Come' album when it came out, but I couldn't help thinking, where's his sense of humour gone? It was quite a downbeat album overall. Then I bought Exodus and played it on my walkman on the journey home on the bus and laughed my ass off, I thought it was fantastic, so tongue-in-cheek. Trouble is though, with segues and jokes, they only work the first couple of times you hear them, then they get boring. Still some great underrated tracks on there I think, and I've never been clear how much Prince actually sings, I'm sure you can hear him on the harmonies just behind Sonny's voice most of the time, and surely that deep electronic voice on the last track is purely him? In the end it might as well have been Prince anyway, he obviously got them to mirror his own voice and told them what to sing where, controlling them just like he used to do with the Time.

I don't think there is one, plain and simple. That album burnt my speakers along with the Beautiful Experience Live Boot.

Exodus was one of the baddest-ass albums of all time. If it would've had WB backing it could've been a big seller w/ or w/out Prince vocals. I remember people bringing up that they had seen the "Good Life" video on MTV and the wanted the album, but you couldn't get it, and the single was limited and hard to find to. (I didn't end up getting it till years afterwards.)

Make a tape or a disc of Exodus w/out the segues and you have one of the phattest Prince records ever recorded. Bar none Exodus freakin rocks!

Agree.

I read in an interview with Prince [was it the one in guitar mag back in 95?] that he played the album 4 the xecs at Warner and they just laughed and ridiculed it.

Just goes 2 show how much they know about what the fans like I guess. Which is n.o.t.h.i..n.g.

That violin solo on Hallucination Rain is gonna cost me my ears if I keep playing it this loud.

I really like Exodus.

Most of the songs are great and the others are at least good. The song I'm listening to a lot right now is "The Exodus Has Begun". Such a powerful fonky song.

"Count The Days" is just a brilliant song aswell. I love how the guitar and powerful lyrics just go great together.

Others like "Get Wild" and "The Good Life" make this album pure fonk. Another I really love is the strangeness that is "Hallucination Rain".

The only bad things about it (as pointed out) are the segues. They might be funny the first time, but after that they become a right pain in the ass.

I love the segues! It pulls the story of Exodus together and are downright comedy! Some aren't as good as others but I'll take them over the segues on prince any day. I feel like the piece is some twisted version of the Mothership Connection and the Wizard of Oz. These sort of remind me of quoting lines from Purple Rain and Under the Cherry Moon. Ever be around freaks quoting Billy Sparks in Purple Rain? Or Christopher Tracy saying "And That Says What?"
...For me, I guess it's just one of those things. It tickles me...I smile, and I can remember back when Prince acted like a fool.

And, yes, this is some of the Funkiest shit in the bunch! Mine never stays out of rotation too long.
