I remember seeing the show on TV and it definitely seemed to be lip-synched and not very good at all.

Prince was obviously going thru a rough time with the death of his son, so I wouldn't diss him too mich for lip synching! I think of all people who are allowed to mime, it would be Prince, he has proven he's one of the best live performers, so on occasion I reckon it's ok!
peace.

Just to be sure: do you mean the "Freedom Day Concert"?

It was aired on MTV and he wears a lilac outfit. The do a few Emancipation numbers along with PR and Joy In Rep closing with One Of Us/Emancipation.

If it is that one, then I beleive he didn't lip-sync. Instead, I read in 'Slave To The Rhythm' that P did, in fact, record all the instruments himself in the studio and the band members (Rhonda included) mimed their parts. P sang live and played SOME guitar live, namely solos.

The reason may have indirectly been the death of his son. The book suggests that he had lost faith in the then-NPG and didn't trust them to play well enough on a "live", national broadcast.

Sorry, just re-read your post - you were in no way referencing the "Freedom Day Concert".

The Emancipation live performance was from The Brits, I believe.

I have always held the impression that it was mimed, as were many of the Emancipation performances from that time. Check out the VH-1 performance; the sounds levels are well off at the beginning so he can't tell where in the song he's meant to be!

It's from the Brit Awards.

I can't remember much about the one I saw apart from that it ended with him walking offstage as the word "emabcipation" and the symbol were drawn by a laser on the curtain through which he walked. It wasn't a Brits performance.

The Brits performance opens with bars from When Doves Cry and 1999, followed by prince appearing to perform a small portion of 'We March' before it becomes 'Emancipation'.

Keep in mind, Prince doesn't control the TV shows that he appears on. If the producers want him to lip-synch, his only choice boils down to: lip-synch or stay home.

We've all seen him live and know for a fact that he doesn't need to lip-synch.

Yeah, I know the performance. I'm sure it's the Brits. Ben Elton announces Prince by saying "the man with no name, but that's OK, 'cause he's a genius" (or something like that) and he says it really sarcastically (I hate Ben Elton razz). The performance seems lip-synched, and Prince looks uncomfortable throughout it. At one stage he looks around as if he thinks something is wrong. They show a close up of JK from Jamiroquai, and he looks bored. I always thought that was so rude. He of all people should be on his hands and knees bowing to Prince. Boy, it sure was "cool" to hate Prince back in '96! All in all, it was just another one of those eerie Emancipation moments! The album is cool, but all the events surrounding it just seem odd. But hey, he's back now!

Prince has lip-synched on a shit load of television appearances. The 1994-96 era was just ridiculous when it came to that.

That's crap. other artists performed live at the Brits. Prince chose not to.
