I am sooo diggin' "For You"

I just got this album last month and barely listened to it until last week and I love every song on this album, save 1. I especially like "I'm Yours" He should do that one in concert. This brings me to this question:

When people say they miss the old Prince, the usually mean the Prince from Purple Rain through Lovesexy, but I say the old Prince is from For You to Purple Rain. Who's the "old Prince" to you?

Prince hasn't done any songs like the ones on the For You album. Do you think he was still trying to "find" his sound then?

I don't know if he was trying to find himself or his musical direction, but considering he was 17-18 when it came out, the music on it was fairly modern and good for such a young artist. I usually spin " So Blue" on reapeat about 10+ before I listen to the rest of the album.

He was actually 20, but WB said he was 18. I don't know, I like this album a whole lot or some reason

OMG I have to agree. I love the funk on FOr you and prince. My song is Just as long I can listen to that over and over again. The whole album is pretty good. I wouldnt want Prince to try and rehash that era nor the Dirty Mind era though. I think he tried to slightly revisit the dirty mind era in the early 90s (i.e. ass out jeans at the mtv) and it really wasnt vibing to me.

"old" prince to me is controversy, since that's when i started being a real fan. so i'm sure this'll be an epiphany of sorts for me as well. i only know the really old "hits."

'Old (Classic) Prince' to me is 1978-88 - That's a whole decade of continually fantastic and timeless music. nod

IT'S A TRIP YOU'RE JUST NOW HEARING THIS. YEAH, IT'S A GOOD ALBUM. AS A WHOLE, IT'S A LITTLE STIFF. P FOUND HIS GROOVE ON HIS SECOND ALBUM. BUT I LOVE "SOFT AND WET'. IT'S ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVE SONGS BY P. I WAS A KID WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT AND I REMEMBER THINKING IT WAS A WHITE GIRL SINGING "SOFT AND WET".

For You is a great debut album you can really see how talented this guy is and he was what 19 at the time? Ok it's not groundbreaking but the diversity is already in place. For You, Soft and Wet, Crazy You through to I'm Yours. Christ that's one hell of an album closer! Listen to that bass playing!! A really, really good album that I always go back to.

For you was and still is a great album (soft and wet is a classic). I also liked his self titled album "Prince" which has my favorite song "with u" on it. But I definitely miss the old Prince from the DirtyMind, Controversy, and 1999 era.

I love For You. I also dig all the outtakes I've heard from that really early era. He just sounds so untainted and pure. I like that.It was before all the trappings of stardom and he was just a kid w/enormous talent and an enormous halo of hair in a studio.I play this album alot.

I'm Yours is just the shit!!!! Period!!!
Listen to the way he absolutely kills the base and lead guitars. Can anyone remember the movie that used this song?

The For You album was killer through and through. I remember when I first heard the title track, I knew right then this was a brother to watch.

Since '84, but I lived his music through other people until '91 when I started actually buying the music myself. I've been playing catch-up ever since: buying the new stuff when it gets released and then buying the old stuff. Some albums I decided to wait on, like this one

I love this album, I have the tape, vinyl and cd. I think "Love is Forever" is a classic, and I think he recorded this at 16. Unbelievable groove and great solo..

this album makes me happy... biggrin

I appreciate "For You" and "Prince" a lot for the 70-Disco-Feeling, which in my opinion is very underrated. "My Love Is Forever", "Just as long...", "I feel for you" an "I wanna be your lover" are mere Disco-tunes with an individual touch by Prince. What a pitty that he didn't put "We can work it out" on "For You", it would have fit very well. And not to mention the Extended-Version of "Sexy Dancer": More than 7 Minutes of finest Disco-Funk. You still can get your grandma on the dancefloor with that Killer-track. Love it! cool

Color Me Badd sampled this song on a song called "How Deep" I posted a thread asking if anyone knew what part of "Crazy You" was sampled, but no one had heard "How Deep." Now that I finally heard "Crazy You" I can listen to "How Deep" a little differently now.

See if you can find "How Deep" on Kazaa

I didn't know who Prince was until the 1999 lp, so that was my first Prince. I bought my own copy of 1999 the same time I bought PR and soon after I bought Controversy, but didn't know about "Prince" and "For You" until several years later. I didn't really give them much of a chance until recently.

I've been listening to Prince since 1983, so I guess I'm partial to 1999, PR, Parade, SOTT etc. I didn't "get" ATWIAD right away, but now I lub it.

The old Prince is the Prince of Dirty Mind on thru SOTT. DM is the album where he found his own voice and in the process separated himself from his contemporaries for the first time. I don't dislike his first two albums, they definitely have their merits musically. But DM was a freak of nature album. A freak of his nature. It was raw, demo-like, full of id, and punk rock-ish. He didn't give a rat's ass what anybody thought starting with that one. After the first two discs it was startling in comparison.

Prince hasn't done any songs like the ones on the For You album. Do you think he was still trying to "find" his sound then?

Absolutely. He was basically just getting his feet wet and had yet to develop into what he became, both lyrically and musically. For You might be the most innocent album he ever released for that reason. "Soft and Wet" notwithstanding. biggrin
