JWs don't believe that Christ was on a cross, but rather that he was on a stake or 'stauros'. So he changed the song from "The Cross" to "The Christ".

Personally, I think he should have kept the title and just changed what the song was about.

I remember Prince playing on some show (Arsenio?) where he had a gigantic prop on the stage curtain that said "Stauros". Fucker was pretty passionate about pointing that shit out.
I'm like, "great... now what am I supposed to use to scare vampires away?"
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

The first time I heard the Christ was in Concert in Utrecht, Holland if I remember correctly. He said something that he felt the cross (as a symbol) is often used for bad purposes and for bad ideologies.... Name change ruined the song for me.... A lot is used for bad purposes and ideologies if people give it an extreme interpretation right so changing the song into the Christ doesn't help in my opinion...

Either version of the song is great IMO.

Changing the song (the song the Cross is somewhat different than the Christ) is more about the message than the lyrics.

It's the message people .

The problem was he put the message about Jesus out there and people did not like it.

The main symbol of Christianity is the cross, and it is in effect the cornerstone of their religion. Jehovahs Witnesses regard Christianity to be a false religion.

Emporor Constantine (300+ AD) started merging the symbols of major religions in an attempt to consolidate all religion under Christianity. The most notable of these symbols were:

The Pagan Cross Of Tammuz - originally a pagan symbol existing centuries before Christianity. In order to increase the cross-over to Christianity, pagans were received into the churches and were permitted to retain their pagan signs and symbols. Hence the Pagan Cross was adopted to stand for the "cross" of Christ.

The Egyptian Ankh - also called ansate cross which the early Christians of Egypt adopted.

Basically Christianity is actually a bastardization of paganism and other religions.

Also there are Standing Stones on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland are arranged in the shape of a cross, but they were erected about 2000 BC.

Just in case u were interested.....after all, you did ask! lol

As creative as he is, he could've written a new song about his beliefs (which he did on The Rainbow Children)... but why mess up a classic song like "The Cross"???

It was like watching him in LA a couple of weeks ago. I'm singing D.M.S.R. with the lyrics I've been familiar with for the last 22 years... he's singing something completely different. Talk about confusing and alienating your audience. Sad thing is, he doesn't care, he got my money, that's all that metters to him.

the roman empire traditionally reserved crucifixion for political enemies, which christ was at the time. it's a pretty safe bet to say christ was crucified, and NOT staked by the romans

As a person who follows the teachings of Jesus I have come to understand that the so called Christian churches are full of teachings and practices that are not of Jesus and God the father.

Jesus said that in the last days there would be plenty of false prophets.

What many people (Americans) fail to realize is that these false prophets sometimes are not preachers but politicians and media talking heads, and maybe even rock stars. When Bush and these fundamentalists talk about Jesus and refuse to practice his teachings they make me realize that the last days are here.

What did this have to do with anything? MrSquiggle wanted to know why Prince decided to be a fuck up and change the lyrics to a beautiful song, he didn't ask for a religious lecture.

Well yeah, sort of. He has been associated with them since at least 1998. By 1998, he chilled with cursing at the concerts and visited a Kingdome Hall in Brooklyn NY).

Did I touch a nerve there. Sorry. I'm neither Pagan, nor Christian.....and I didn't hear any of this from Pagans.....just reading books by all sorts of pretty well educated people from different backgrounds who among themselves all agree that the above is pretty much spot on - and that's the NEUTRAL's opinion irrespective of what Pagans, Christians or whoever may think.
