I always kinda wondered about this, too. As of a month before, he was even telling people at the Love 4 One Another shows at Paisley Park that he and the NPG were going to be there. Wasn't it officially stated he cancelled due to "personal reasons"?

The SNL performance was supposed to be in September of '95, same week that TGE was released, I believe. Prince and Mayte weren't even married yet at that time, but the "personal reason" might have been their engagement.

I don't know if this is accurate but I thought I always heard that it was another rebellious act against WB through which The Gold Experience was released. With "I Hate U" doing well on the charts, he withdrew a completed video and also cancelled this appearance in defiance. I don't know how accurate this is but I sure like to recall it this way - this guy is the real REBEL!

The main problem with your story is that EYE HATE U never did anything near "well" on the charts...

Prince was to perform but bakc out 2 day's before and BLues Traveler replaced him.

Rumor goes.....

NBC wanted to know what songs he was going to perform on the show after an exec heard him rehearsing a song called "Pussy Control". Ad on to that the drama of WB going back on thier promoise to release "Exodus" shortly after TGE, he decided to back out.

Also, I Hate U made it 2 number 11 on the pop singles charts and IF the video was released and got spins, it would havel anded top 10. The video was pulled by Prince even though Billboard had it as a new on that week on the billboard charts.

If I remember this right, SNL took a jab at Prince that evening on the show, calling him a flake and showing a bowl of corn flakes.

Are you telling me that EYE HATE U, one of the crappiest singles ever released by Prince (now THERE's a "real rebel"), reached number 11 on Billborad's HOT 100?!?

Well, I just checked it out at this site--

http://princetext.tripod....ngles.html

And according to this chart, EYE HATE U did indeed chart well-- peaking at number 12 on BillBoard's HOT 100. I can't believe it. I sure never heard it on the radio (nor did I want to).

I think I Hate U went to #12 in the U.S. It was definitely top 15. I always thought Warner Bros. was the one that wanted the ballads released as singles--like how Prince wanted Peach to be the first single from the hits collection, but the label released Pink Cashmere instead.

It should've been higher- it was one of his best singles ever. Had the video been released it would've gone in the top five, I imagine.

Whatever the case, it killed the momentum of the album, and one of his best albums disappeared and is not even in print anymore. Way to go...

I remember David Spade taking all kinds of shots at him during his "Spade In America" routine in the "Weekend Update" segment on the show.

I was laughing, cuz... y'know, I stayed up waitin' for that shit... confused

I Hate U is the last release by Prince that I heard on the radio and I think I only heard it 2 or 3 times. I havent heard anything more recent....not even anything from Musicology!

You got it, exactly. The bowl of corn flakes, oh man. wink

I was fucking pissed at Prince for that. I remember being incredibly excited to see him perform. This was around the time where it seemed like he lived in an underground city or something...I always heard about shit after it happened, and never got to see anything. I was so fiending for some funk.

And I've fucking despised Blues Traveler ever since.
