anybody else feel guilty?

is it just me, or does anyone feel guilty about listening to bootlegs or stuff that wasn't supposed to be released.

I will say I did when I bought my first bootleg. sad

But, now. No guilt at all. Prince would be one of the richest MFers if he just could/would release the back catalog and have excellent, first quality recordings that we've all been waiting for.

If he did, there would be no, "Bootleg" market.

Same thing with the concert videos/DVDs. He records everything. I'd love to have a DVD of each show I've been too. That would be tremendous. (Expensive, but tremendous)

But, we'll see. They may be some contractual obligations that is preventing him from releasing the music/videos. Because I'd definitely rather have the orginial versions, as opposed to any revamped, remixed crap.

I do have a conscious, that's the reason why I think twice before buying any official Prince CD or ticket as I don't want to support a cult like the JWs. BTW, when I read the title to the thread I first thought it was about that subject.....

I kind of feel guilty.... but then at the same time... I am enjoying the music, and isn't that what's intended?

I don't. You have to remember there is a difference between a BOOTLEG and a PIRATE. A PIRATE is an illegal copy of something that *COULD* be purchased legitimately. BOOTLEGS are not available in any other form. Thus as far as I'm concerned there is nothing to feel guilty about. Its about sharing the music. It was meant to be heard.

Personally I paid money for maybe my first two bootlegs at record shows 10 years ago. But since then I have only traded and no money has changed hands. So what's to feel guilty about? I trade materials for what I have and I return the favor when asked. I am a link in the music sharing chain. Everyone benefits (from the music) but no one profits financially.

No blood, no foul, no crime.

Well except for the well documented crime that Prince doesn't get off his arse and release this stuff himself and pass go and collect the $200 mil he could gross in 5 years releasing the stuff he knows we all want!! I do think its interesting however that his control freak side is even stronger than is greed side!!

its not so much about the money, its about the fact that he didn't intend to release them for whatever reason, and its his music so he should be entitled to keep things back.

i started thinking about this because im an amateur photographer and i went to frame one of my pictures. the framer liked the photo and insisted that i make prints and sell them at her shop; the photo is one of my favourites and quite personal to me so i didn't want to make any prints, even if i could make some cash, so i turned the offer down. but i was just thinking what if she ignored me and went ahead and made prints anyway- i would be pretty mad. so then i thought well, i have some prince bootlegs- aint that the same thing?

why feel guilty about something that you cant control? i mean...if youve got the bootleg...
why moan over the fact? its already been recorded..and its landed in your hands however it got there. so why not listen to it? u have no one to blame but your self.
on a side note here...
feeling guilty has NOTHING to do with having a conscious. guilt is something you should only feel for a nano-second when you make an honest mistake.
i could go on....but...my break at work is over now...sad ill try to come back to this when i get home tonight.

The correct question is:
Doesn’t Prince feel quilty that he can’t match with the bootleg releases?

Be honest, which one do you prefer:
Musicology or let’s say … Sabotage’s Purple Rush 5

Private Piano Rehearsals 1983
Cold Coffee And Cocaine, Mama
7 June 1984 First Avenue
17 days, Our Destiny, Roadhouse Garden, All Day All Night, Free, Noon Rendezvous, Erotic City, Something In The Water (Dose Not Compute), When Doves Cry, Irresistible Bitch, Possessed
30 March 1985 Syracuse NY
Let's Go Crazy, Delirious, 1999, Little Red Corvette, Take Me With U, Do Me Baby, Irresistible Bitch, Possessed, How Come U Don't Call Me Any More, Let's Pretend We’re Married, International Lover, God, Computer Blue, Darling Nikki, The Beautiful Ones, When Doves Cry, I Would Die For You, Baby I'm A Star, Purple Rain

I always buy ALL official music released by Prince as soon as it's available (even if I already have a copy on boot/CDR). I've certainly helped line his pockets if you know what I mean! Beacause of this, I don't feel ashamed about it, but I don't like people who only buy boots and then get CDR copies of stuff that is in stores or on NPGMC etc. Support the man, and then if you still need a Prince fix, go and get some boots, BUT remember promise yourself you'll buy the official version if it ever surfaces.

I buy everything the man releases officially, so I don't sweat it too much on the bootleg thing. I would never buy a pirate copy of something officially released, only that which isn't commercially released (and its rare I actually pay for these things. Most I get through trades). If Prince releases something that I already have a boot of, then I will purchase it again in its official form.

Prince needs to realise that much of his fan base has been maintained by bootlegs over the years. Many have become fans upon hearing stuff not on his records (I've converted plenty of people with the unreleased "Undertaker" album). More of this classic material needs to be released through the NPGMC.
