What are the WORST TV Performances by Prince?? also... something I noticed, which isn't good and shows a "pattern"

Ok.. hey we got your favorite tv.. lets hit the other side..

What TV Performances were just off or bad!

I think When Prince was on VIBE with Sinbad as the host.. Prince was just off.. when he did "The One"..his voice and I think it was just to slow.. pretty bad.
-----

* another thing has anyone else notice. it seems whenever the Mainstream Public is invited or broadcasts Prince's latest stuff in the last 6 years or so.. Prince picks bad .. or just kinda off performances..?????

*I think The Rave PPV version on 1999 was just off!! and that is what went around the whole world!.. it was just off.. and the weakest part of the concert.. George Clinton ruining it even more.. with that bark!!! ( that concert show so much GREAT live playing.. and everything BUT the ONLY thing everyone who didn't get the PPV saw was that AWEFUL version of 1999)!!!sadsadsad

*also the 1996 "happy B day to Mayte"/"emancipation little concert broadcast to MTV,VH1& BET all live at once..

it was not "live" all of it.. he lipsynced.. and even pretended to play guitar in it from a pre-reocrded track??

****WHY WHY WHY would you do this.. when you are showing the music industry & the public.. who you are NOW that you are "Free" from Warner Bros???

whats your thoughts???

2) The Rosie O'Donnell Show - He looked and acted a total idiot on that!!

3) The Muppets Tonight Show

4) The Larry King Interview on CNN - Not as in depth an interview as was expected!!!

Well, 2 begin with the baby was long dead and cremated by the time the interview took place (Not the airing time, but the actual event) where he said that everything was all good regarding the baby when she asked him, its just that him and Mayte did not want their children in the limelight!!

Also Mayte was forced by him and his people 2 look happy and contented and in total wedded bliss when she replied 2 Oprah that the marriage was gonna b "forever"!!And, despite the fact that just recently beforehand she had gone through the horrendously painfull experience of losing the baby!! In fact a close freind of mine eye had at the time who shall remain nameless, told me that the marriage was over before it had even started!! Now, 6 years later, who is she in the tattooed arms of??? Tommy Lee, the ex-Mr. Pamela Anderson!! And who is he now with?? Mani!!!! The whole thing about them being true soulmates that he explained on Oprah was total bullshit!!

He was on the Sunday Show (I think that was what it was called) in the UK. He was dressed as Tora Tora, with a white chiffon scarf completely around his head and face, a hat on the top. He was sat in like an armchair with Mayte perched on the arm. When the woman interviewer asked him a question he whispered the answer to Mayte and then she gave the reply. It was like Sooty speaking to Mr Corbett.
I thought it was cool as it was really his way of telling Warner Brothers to f*** off trying to control him. However any average viewer must have thought he was a right tw*t.

hmmmm pretty interesting.. I never heard any of that..so you heard the marriage was over b4 it started.. wow!?? does your friend know why.. they even got married?

I did read in Purple Rein.. that she was soooo sad or just sick n tired of Prince recording all day and night every day.. every week.. and she would cry all the time??

makes you wonder .. she was there b4 they got married.. she saw was part of the satge show and tours?? why would she be surprised after thye got married?????

pretty odd..

-----

* another thing I heard about that UK interview about him not talking .. and mayte doing the talking for him..DO YOU have that on tape ( or anyone)??? is so.. why don't you make "real" file or quicktime file.. so we can see it!smile

Also He did a VH1 Save The Music charity bash and he performed a cut from Emancipation at the beginning, and then the Take Me With U/Raspberry Beret medley at the end of the show!! The thing is also on that show was so many other musical giants, like Stevie Wonder, and eye was so diappointed that Prince never jammed with any of them, particularly with his new found "frendliness", even Stevie Wonder!!
It would have been awesome 2 see Prince jam with Stevie Wonder on " Higher Ground", instead SW jammed on that song with Steve Winwood!!

Actually, speaking of VH1 and Prince, the BEST performance he did for them was when he opened their first VH1 Fashion Awards Show with Pussy Control!!! Nobody there knew how 2 take it!! They was absolutely dumbstruck!!And on prime time 2 !!! LOL ( Ooops, this should have gone on the BEST TV Appearence thread, but it didnt come 2 mind untill now!!!)

Well, if u want my honest opinion, Prince only married Mayte because he got her pregnant!! It doest take a rocket scientist 2 figure it out!! How come just 6 weeks after they got married it was announced that they were expecting their first child?? Either Prince hit the jackpot on their wedding night(LOL) or she got pregnant before and he felt he had 2 marry her 2 do the right thing!! Eye dont think there was True Love between them!!
Also u could tell, by the body language, from all the photos of them at various functions that things were not right!! She was happy that she was seen with Prince so that she might b able 2 get ahead in the music industry and he just wanted a beautifull woman that he could showcase around!!

Also, do u think he was apss up Kat Dyson, Rhonda Smith and Marva King who were all band members at the time and all exceptionally beautifull women just 2 b loyal and faithful 2 Mayte?? Eye dont think so, knowing his reputation with women!!

I think my worst performance must of been the Tube anniversary show in the UK. He play a couple of new songs including Baby Knows and it was all over the palce. I'm a musician too and I would gone ape. The band were slow and Prince just kinda crawled along. that song just dosen't sound good live!

Oh and that Sunday show performance was totally cring inducing!! eek

Emancipation in 96 was NOT lipsynced, it may not have broadcatsed live, but it was a LIVE performance, an excellent one at that.
As for the Rosie O Donnell show Prince played Somebody's Somebody & The Holy River, two superb performances. As for the interview part of the show that was slightly embarrassing. But that was down to the simply fact that Rosie O Donnell was so obnoxious. She never asked any decent questions, she also tried to make Prince look like a fool, she showed no respect at all. She's about as funny as a boil on a cow's arse, she is an arse.
Yes the Oprah Winfrey show was a bit of a farce, except for the performance of the songs, but the Oprah Winfrey Show is a farce no matter who's on it, Oprah & her show is so transparent. A pretentious lot of crap.

He appeared on there wearing his hair in those godawfull little bunches!! he looked a total wreck!! And 2 make matters worse was when he was performing it beside Jay leno clapping away there was Heather Locklear in the background trying 2 get down with the beat!!! LOL

Are you referring to the entire performance on Vibe or just the performance of "The One"?

In my opinion, the thing that dragged that show down was the Chaka Khan and Larry Graham performances. Everything else by Prince was great. His falsetto was off on "Let's Work" but the energy level was very high, the crowd was into it, and Prince was really working the crowd like he was at a concert (and not just a TV performance). On the song The One, I couldn't disagree with you more. I know The One was being played on select radio stations around the U.S. before the album came out. But for me, when I saw the The One performed on Vibe, that snippet was the first time I had heard the song, and I loved it. In fact, I liked the Vibe performance of The One so much that it took me a really long time to like the album version of the song when it was released. What I liked about the Vibe performance of The One is that Prince was using his natural voice which on that song seemed to carry more emotion as opposed to the studio version which sounds very clinical.

As far as all of this concerned, the only thing I can say is that in 1996, the band was extremely weak - in my opinion, the worst band in Prince's history - and really, that's all you need to understand. The Emancipation concert was extreamly weak because he had an extremely weak band. But I think Prince was just sooooo ready to put seperation between him and Warner Bros that he decided "the show must go on".

On the Rave PPV concert, I tend to agree with you. I think what went wrong with that show is that it was an edited live performance, and so the continuity of the show didn't flow very well. And I think because Prince is such a perfectionist that he was trying to make sort of a "studio" version of a live performance because he knew that the Rave show would be something that would be around forever. So what happened is that Prince overproduced the concert. Instead, the show probably would've been much better if he just let the cameras roll and treated it like an actual concert and not a TV production. But definitely not one of his better perfomances.

The one thing you have to keep in mind during this time is that Prince was EXTREMELY unhappy because of his situation with Warner Bros. Everything he was doing at the time was merely to fulfill contractual obligations. These performances were under the dreadful "slave" experience where Prince defiantly wore "slave" on his face.

As far as Dinner With Delores on letterman is concerned, in addition to being extremely unhappy, he also had an extremely weak band - not to mention the fact that I don't think Prince ever really liked David Letterman. Didn't he and Letterman have a spat or two? But no doubt it was bad performance.

Whats The Worst Performance By Prince???
Well the guy can kick ass when live in concert , and deserves being called the greatest performer ever, but, and its a big but!! when he is on a TV show, what crap!!!!!
The best performance I`ve ever seen was when Prince played The Arsenio Hall Show in 1991.
His worst was on Top Of The Pops in 1997. He could have blown the competition away on that one but The Spice Girls were better!!!!!
It was such a wooden performance !!
I find his TV performances are really poor and definitly give the mainstream audience the wrong idea about him.

Probably the worst performance I've ever seen him give was on the promotional tour 4 "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" when he came 2 Holland and played at the "TV SHOW OP REIS".

But that wasn't all Prince's fault.

He wanted 2 bring all his own equipment and stuff but since the host of that show is a complete ass they refused him 2 do that and forced him 2 use their equipment.

After the performance Prince gave a brief interview cuz the fans in the audience kept clapping and calling 4 him 2 come back.

When Prince played the perfomance back he was so unhappy with it that he pulled the plug on the whole thing and denied them the rights of airing the performance and the interview.

They later smoothed things over by sending the audiotrack 2 Paisley Park where Prince remixed the whole thing and then they showed the whole thing on the show a month later.

But it still sucked bigtime. The performance was totally off. The sound stank. His voice was hardly audible. And his performance seemed very uninspired.

Plus he looked like a total idiot with that tea-towel round his head and Larry Graham beside him with his aligator boots.

That was such a shame. It's true, whenever he performs on big shows that lots of people watch who aren't per se Prince fans, he fucks things up.

Take the 1995 MTV Music Awards 4 instance. He was scheduled 2 play some new material from TGE. It had been promoted 4 weeks. And they just kept saying during the commercials "Next, TAFKAP will perform several songs from his forthcomingn album The Gold Experience".

Then he finally came out at the end of the show and played "Peach" [tho I have 2 admit it was a good rendition of the song] slammed his guitar in2 the air and walked off stage.

I totally understood what that was all about. And I thought it was kinda cool of him 2 do that. Just saying "Fuck U. U think I'll play by Ur rules??"

But what did non fans make of that performance?

Geeeeez.

I think one of the worst or 'disapointing' performances was at the Brit awards in 1997 (i think). After collecting the award for Best international artist the previous year he stunned everyone with a strange anti WB, pro Gold Experience speech. Then when asked back to perform Emancipation the next year, the perfect chance to prove what a kick arse live performer he still is... he mimed! He even kept his gloves on to 'play' his bass guitar, not even making an effort to look like he was playing live! WHY?!

what are y'all smokin?!?!

prince's turn on the oprah show was one of his all-time best tv gigs EVER!

yeah, it was a bit obvious that he was stretching truths here and there but it truly was the greatest romance ever sold... the parts when oprah got him to touch on his youth, his father, and people over the years thinking him strange or gay were riveting... besides, both performances for that show ("if i was your girlfriend" "sleep around") were OFF THE HOOK!

that airing goes in the all-time best fools!

alond with...

1985 grammys "purple rain"
1987 mtv awards "sign o..." / "play in the sunshine"
1989 saturday night live "electric chair"
1991 mtv awards "gett off"
1996? vh1 honors "interactive" "endorphinmachine"

I think Prince chooses songs that are less popular to perform for talk/award shows because it gives him the opportunity to perform music he prefers or enjoys most from his catalogs.
