the Rave vs. Musicology debate is funny, because both of these discs are average Prince. both are extremely calculated releases that combine some good tracks and some half-assed tracks. musicology is better on the ballads and leaner; rave is better on the pop end. both have that tired, one-man-band sound, with ridiculous programmed drums. on that score, musicology is less excusable because he has such a great drummer in his band now.

i put these 2 discs in the same class as chaos & disorder and maybe ATWIAD. They're not horrible like Batman or New Power Soul, but there's more calculation and control-freak impulses on them than there is inspiration.

when Prince's inspiration comes through, you get the Rainbow Children.

I love Rave. I think people who like R&B would like it better than those who were more into different styles of music. I think one of the main reasons it didn't do as well as it could have is because it was basically a "heart-breaky, Prince is depressed cause old girl was too through, and now he has to be embarassed because he swore they would last until the end of all time and now the marriage is over and he's got to talk about it" kind of album, but on the cover he looked a glam-rock, blue vinyl-clad, pigtail-wearing, ribboned hot mess. I think people who might have dug the album (mainstream r&b fans, etc) were completely thrown off by the whole Prince image then, and just refrained from the whole thing. I am a huge fan, but when I saw him then I thought- "what the f#%@!.....that fool is just crazy."

I think it's a good comparison as well. They do sound alike.
But I think Musicology has the edge.
Musicology is more dynamic. Rave is much more flat.
Rave is too long. There's not much (if any) filler on Musicology
Most of the songs work for me, whereas probably less than half on Rave work.
And obviously Musicology works better with the public, too.

I am curious to hear "In 2" but it seems too much like a scam to me.
It's practically the same record isn't it?

It's generally the same *SONGS*, but it's SO not the same record.

Listen to someone else's copy if you have to. It's good stuff.

I would like to but I don't know anyone who has even heard of Rave Unto, let alone bought Rave Into. Maybe someday.

I think Musicology's sales are strictly a result of Prince's strange-but-true leap back into the spotlight, not to mention the concert give-aways. If Rave had been released now, it would be doing just as well, I believe, and Musicology would have done just as badly as Rave if released in '99.

Wow, that's exactly how I'd put it too. Rave has better pop songs, Musicology has better ballads (except I Love U But.., which kills EVERYTHING on Musicology).

I was actually very suspicious about this album when it came out;

firstly I wondered what on earth was he trying to achieve with Arista, then I noticed 'Prince' in the credits. There was also the videoClip to 'The Greatest Romance' played all over the music channels. I actually thought he was going to step back on spotlight at this time. I guess he was only testing the water.

as for Rave in2, I certainly don't think its a ripoff as previously sugested, I actually don't mind maxi-singles and to see a whole album makeover is a bonus! I like his reinterpretation of 'Pretty Man' its so damn funky...

I think you're right, that rave could have been a hit just as easily (or musicology a flop just as easily), and that it's really just good timing in 2004, but I still think musicology is more exciting as a record.

I actually like Rave a lot. Musicology is pretty good, but rave has a bunch of different kind of songs and most of them work. Wherever U go, the beat for man-o-war, greatest romance, sun, moon, stars, eye love u, those are all good. and even the other "filler" tracks r better then some other stuff prince released in the 90s. btw, i think i read somewhere that since people always say prince could write a hit whenever he wanted to, that greatest romance was him trying to do that. didnt work tho..
