prince isn't better tehnical then those guys
,but he knows how to build better tension on guitar.
for example on the guitar solo on west,
he solos and after few bars he uses feedbeck to build the monumentum of the solo.
it's realy incredible.
or the way he used those high and low notes with whhammy bar while he played bambi(celebration 2002_).
i don't know if you ppl can understand what i meant to say but the fact is that when he wants he is realy mean muthaf....r on guitar.

Actually, Prince is way better technically than most people seem to give him credit for - particulary when it comes to rythym guitar!

However, it is his overall savvy with music composition and arrangment and his amazing feel that allow him to be so expressive and sound head and ahoulders above the rest!

There are many things P does better. The only thing he doesn't do better are typical 80's shred techniques like superfast alternate picked scales, whammy bar tricks, sweep picked arpeggio's and two-hand tapping. But he's definitely better than those guys at catchy melodies, expressive vibrato, building tension and drama. And his timing is superior, as demonstrated not only by his leads but also his rhythm playing.

I would say that over the course of his career the main thing Prince has done better with his guitar than any of the people you mentioned (or any other notable guitar players) is...

I don't really see what your problem is - sure, there are some mega-obsessives on here, but so what? Who cares? Are they hurting anyone? So they think Prince is better than anyone - what is wrong with that? You can't say that they are wrong - to them, he is the best thing ever - I'm happy for them.

But to constantly berate people for discussing their favourite subject, as you do, is equivalent to the same obsessive behaviour that you so openly deplore.

This site is so full of fans that don't play any instrument, let alone guitar, and everytime I try 2 discuss anything musical here, I get little interest.... And you are wrong. I CAN like Prince's music and not care for his guitar playing. As I have said before, how much guitar playing you listen to MAY have a factor in how one would rate Prince's playing.

I'd say Prince's lefthand vibrato was the bomb. But Vai and Satch can burn -- so I wouldn't say better in any regard.

Prince knows when not to play guitar. Many tech-shredders don't.

No, I'm not a guitar player. I think what I like best about Prince's guitar playing is the tastefulness with which he plays, and and the feeling. I disliked the ultra-long "rant" jamming I heard him do in some early work. But I notice his solos took on a more "meaningful" feel at some point. His guitar work is more outstanding in live performances too. True, he knows when NOT to play.

It's a little dry, Stevie won't you try, to drool a little drool on it and grease the banana!

The only thing Prince is better at than those guys is that he can dance while playing guitar at the same time. All sarcasm aside, that's really hard to do while in the midst of a difficult guitar solo.

Personally I don't see what all of the fuss is about. It's not about who is 'better' it's all about personal preference.
It's like art, you wouldn't say Van Gogh was a 'better' painter than Monet, because you prefer the way he painted flowers.
Prince is personally my favourite guitar player. He's not better than Clapton, Santan or Vai, I just prefer his style.
