Are the giveaways prompting sales? Do you think that BECAUSE of the high charting position of Musicology (mainly due concert giveaways) people are buying the CD at retail? Thereby, success breeding success?

Of course. I think it helps all of the artists who are in the Top 10. Visibility accounts for something. I believe that was another reason for the concert cds; to ensure that he stays visibly on the chart, thus continuing to promote the album.

It's difficult to really tell what the effects of the giveaways are. There's a whole bunch of trickle down effects with those giveaways. Industry people take the charts very seriously, and he's doing well because of the giveaways, so he could be in more listening stations and have better product placement, more ads, which can all lead to more retail sales I do know that the giveaways are making their way into mild fans hands, causing more awareness that P is back. For instance, I ran into a friend the other day who said, "I herd the new Prince CD, it's pretty cool, my girlfriend got one at the show" This person would have never herd the CD otherwise, will he buy another P CD in the future, who knows?
