Ms

i hear ya, I dig it too but is it overrated, hmmm...

Sometimes Prince's falseto voice gets on my nerves!!!!

Both he and Keys have deep speaking voices then when its time to sing- mickey mouse! heehee!

Pschye I still dig him tho, but his falsetto annoys me on some days!

Random Duck...
I don't agree with you. But I do understand where you're coming from. Purple Rain is a beautiful love ballad. I have my own interpretation of what it means. "The kid" wants to shower "Apollonia" with himself and his love. Prince being known for the color "Purple" you can personify the color. "He only wants to see her dancing in the purple rain.
I agree, it's only a glimpse of what Prince can really do, and everybody loves it! So what does that say about Prince? If he really wanted to blow the hell out of commercial music, Billboards, and MTV, I'm pretty sure he could.

I agree "Purple Rain" doesn't do it to me anymore. Maybe back in the day it did. But I've done dedicated it to so many ex-girlfriends that this song has been played out in this Prince fan's opinion. The funny thing is my wife who is not a Prince fan really loves this song.

I don't think there's anything wrong in not liking PR!!!
Yeah, it's an average song, and in fact with this song the kid reaches "everybody's soul" in the movie.
Nobody seemed to care about him when he was playing "computer blue".....which is the one I prefer from the album (although it hits me more when it's played on piano)
Purple Rain make everybody agree the kid will make it...

I think the average "Joe" like PR because it's easy to sing and remember. "Purple Rain, Purple Rain, Purple Rain, Purple Rain", It's kinda like, "You Can't Touch This". People have a tendency to latch on to songs of that nature. A lot of songs take us back to a place and time. That memory is good. But I'm glad The Brother has evolved to a diferent place and time.

the song isn't one of my favourites either, but his performance of it was always loaded with energy and emotion when i was at one of his shows. I love it how the song works in the movie too, especially with the LONG silence before it.

Gotta agree; I always thought it was too anthemic. And the album is one of the LAST ones I bought -- and I have been a big fan since 1979.

Live it's better, especially since he changes the guitar solo all the time, but the audience waving arms in the air embarasses me!

I'll do the wild sign, the love sign, I'll make the Prince noise, I'll do the Housequake...but I will not wave my hands back and forth in the air.

Confession IS good for the soul, I feel better.

Cornerman

Prince in general is mediocre...

Love it or leave it he ain't no Beethoven, you gotta love him for what he is. He is a pure artist in the respect that he is a pure product of America. A person with no real skills who became a star before he even realized that Disney was a corporation and not just a nice old man who drew mouse cartoons. Take any kid with a small amount of musical talent and a flair for the dramatic and give him time and money and you could have what we have with Prince. The slant would be different but the over all product would be the same.

He's loveable because we can relate to him, and because he gets to do things we never will.

And there's no denying his ability to write a catchy tune.
(now here comes the hate mail, sorry guys, gotta say what I think)

Shut the fuck up, dopey. No, I am not going to reply to any "org notes" or via e-mail. If this fool wants to insult me (or if she wants to try), she might as well do it out in the open, because it's going to be put out in the open regardless.

You want this post to be the topic, dumbass? Ok, I've seen Purple Rain performed live half a dozen times and I'm damned sick of it.

Well, I know lots of people that dont like PR too.
It´s not one of my fave songs by P, but it has a special thing: it´s an unique ballad. PR is very weird compared to most ballads performed by Vandross, Gladys Knight, W. Houston, Al Green, etc. It has those effects on the voices, a beautiful long guitar solo and some scary orchestrations in the end. Just because of it´s originality, I consider it a great song. But it´s not the song I usually choose to listen to.

I've waved my hands in the air!

Especially when I'm watching the movie and I get really into his performance. It doesnt' matter how many times I watch him or hear the song, I'm always 'moved'

"Purple Rain" is a beautiful song.

Not Prince's best IMO, but definitely beautiful.

I've always loved Purple Rain, but I can see why some people don't like it. It's a very dark ballad composed in a strange way. The reason I like it I think is because I always felt it put in hope and saddness in opposition. It's an interesting idea, one that deserves observation. I also simply love the sound of it.

I like this song, but I'm not IN LOVE with it.I know it's an emotional song that touches alot of people, but I guess it just never "moved me" the same way that other Prince songs have.Don't know if I would consider it "overrated",though.

PLS

'purple rain' has always been one of my most loved prince songs, ever since i first heard it way back in the 80s.

for personal reasons, i was away from the prince scene for a long while and intentionally didn't listen to his music because of the emotional component it held for me. now years later i am back and enjoying all the music again but the one song that still remains painful for me to hear is 'purple rain'. sometimes i still avoid listening to it if i am feeling particularly emotional.

hearing it is a bittersweet experience for me.

for me, it is a very powerful song, and it's hard loving something so much than can make you feel so sad.

Yes, PR is a 'rock classic' but I've never liked it too much either. It did get my mother into Prince though! And as for WDC, I have to disagree with you - it is a thing of beauty and to this day we've never heard anyone elsedo anything like it.

Purple Rain is very pver rated these days
I see Purple Rain as a time not a song
If you were there in 84 when it was all
happening then I am sure you have some
connection to that song.
But for those that weren;t there we don't GET it...
It is just another rock ballad
