I noticed that the author, in so many words, said that Prince was cheating on Mayte with Mani.

I like Prince's opinion's on current events, but I wish he would expound more on his one word/one sentence answers (I know it's both his and the interviewers fault).

this article is well written but it gets a lot of things wrong, theres no mention of SOTT. and to call prince merely 'soul and pop' is quite stupid. prince is about funk and rock way before he is soul.

this also shows prince still gives some of the worst interviews in music EVER! hes sounding really fuddy duddy these days and old.

But you know whats ironic? Soul is the CORE of funk & rock so I think he's WAAAY soul b4 funk & rock lol

I do however agree that he's kinda manipulative when it comes to answering the ?uestions but whats new? He's been like that ever since the get-go, right?

well, soul isnt really the 'core' of funk, funk for example, isnt song-based like funk is. but yeah, funk is just like an offshoot of what certain soul and R&B artists were doing. theyre not the same thing though, although there can be a lot of overlap.

soul isnt the core of rock either, rock is really more blues, R&B and some country too. anyway, not to be an asshole, but prince doesnt make soul music. hes made some soul songs, but hes not a soul artist. and just cos hes soulful and incorporates shards of soul in his music, doesnt make him a soul artist!

Soul is not a genre nor a label, people play with this term so damn loosely that they're 4getting what does it really stand for.

Like 4 example, his solo in "When My Guitar Weeps" or whateva the title is. Thats soul right there.

Billie Holiday & Joni Mitchell are down-right soulful IMHO so is Jimi and so is Chaka Khan who's considered many things like Funk vocalist or disco star lol but the whole damn thing oriented? They're soul singers(despite their genres or labels). Not to get carried away here but "soul" doesn't have to do with church or the damn holy ghost, if it striked you right in the chest,,,thats soul.

If not 4 the rest then at least 4 me. Thats how I see it!

erm, why isnt soul a genre? i think youre getting the word in its dictionary meaning confused with what it means as a genre label. it is very much so a genre, sorry to break it to you. if soul isnt a genre, then neither is rock or blues or funk or etc etc...

his solo in while my guitar is indeed soulful, but its nothing to do with SOUL the genre. i think youre getting these two things (soulful as in the intangible feeling and soul as in the genre) confused. the fact you said soul has nothing to do with the church makes me think you need to perhaps read up a little more on what soul, the musical form, is. to put in short, anyone can sound soulful from joni to aretha to prince to billie, but that doesnt mean they make soul, the music.
