Prince can't fool me! CAMILLE ain't nothin' but a rip off!! I'm sitting here listening to some Stevie Wonder d/l'd from ITunes (about 35 songs). Anyway, "Maybe Your Baby" comes on   I hear the sped up voice & instantly think of the Camille tracks, knowing Prince is a big Stevie head 
W/ me not being up on my Stevie I'm probably extraordinarily late w/ this but I've never seen anyone mention a possible inspiration for the Camille persona. Man, it ain't nothin' but a Stevie Wonder gimmick from '72!    I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it | |

Stevie sings at one point 'I'm a little boy'.  I thought this before - maybe this was the inspiration for Camille.
I always took that higher vocal to be like a mischevious Stevie. That's a mischevious song. In fact, for all his lovable old humanitarian Stevie image some of his songs are kinda mischevious (about women especially - womaniser?). Thinking specifically: Sweet Little Girl (end part where he starts shouting) Maybe Your Baby I Wanna Talk To You If You Really Love Me Keep On Running Big Brother You Haven't Done Nothin' Incidentally, check out the tracks 'I Wanna Talk To You' (Where I'm Coming From) and 'Cash In Your Face' (Hotter Than July) for examples of Stevie playing different characters and using different voices in songs. | |

The one with Stevie is a little embarrasing in that Stevie rambles on and everyone just wants him to sing. Then he trails off and sounds as though he is stuck with nothing to say when the band cuts out on the 1, so he starts singing and all is well. Btw, Cal: some of PFunk's songs has that cartoonish voice too. Funkadelic also has the lower register distorted voice you hear at the beginning of "1999" and used as narration on TRC.
You can also find these vocal effects used on a few of Jimi Hendrix's songs, like "Third Stone From The Sun," "And The Gods Made Love" and "EXP." So the Funk Family Tree has this aspect within many of its branches. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes. | |

i have heard that guitar sound somewhere before as well, and that keyboard sound...
why does he have to reinvent the wheel? these are tools which have been borrowed with the aid of knowledge of studio technology(slowing the backing tape down when laying down the vocal - which a lot of people do, slightly, to give an edge to the vocal - David Bowie Modern Love). its what he does with the effect that matters. i love the camille stuff though, the voice always sounds a little mischievious. He did the same thing with the guitar (Hello). somebody could have done that before but so what. i like it for what it sounds like and dont get as much of a kick from how much his innovative production stuff compares to others. |
