"For You" Vs. "Prince" A lot of his later material varies so, I think that it would be a little hard to fairly compare them. These to early release, though, I feel are in the same vain. Which do you prefer?

"Prince" is like the album that "For You" could have been. It showcases his future potential as a musical genius much more. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I prefer Prince but I like For You too. Prince just has that feel good vibe that I love though... Did you order a pizza ma'am? Prince- UTCM

Of course, I'm the odd ball. I have always loved "For You." Not to take anything away from "Purple Rain," but I will always argue that PR is so overrated, particularly when it comes to instrumentation/arrangement. "For You" is a great example of Prince's diverse musical tastes and seems to be far more musically complex that some of the more commercially-based albums. Still think SOTT is his greatest album, but I would also put "For You," "Parade," "The Black Album," "1999" and "Controversy" in my Top 5.

"So Blue"- Enough said. S I LOVE YOU GIRL!!! We think alike, that is my fave on that album. As to the question at hand, I feel that the two albums are one in the same. For You may lean more toward the disco and R & B flavor of its time, where Prince adds some Pop and Rock flavor. To me they are equal because they both have some big flaws (the mousey singing on most of the For You album and the boringness of tracks like When We're Dancing Close and Slow on the Prince album). But both albums have equally good tracks to be found as well, for example Just As Long As We're Together on For You which is brilliant and the great disco-funk of I Wanna Be Your Lover on Prince.

I prefer "Prince" over "For You". Both of them are great but you can see how much he progressed on "Prince" before really breaking ground on "Dirty Mind". Andy is a four letter word.

For You sounds too produced. His singing is girlie, and the songs are weak (with a few exceptions). I rarely listen to this album. It is the mark of a genius, but a raw one.
"Prince" however shows he's learning things. More pop songs, songs about lesbians, a wicked guitar solo on WYWTMSB, and the track to end em all....Bambi! It also contains I Feel For You, his 1st pop classic I Wanna Be Your Lover, and the gorgeous Still Waiting ( a precursor for How Come U Dont Call Me). Sexy Dancer is funkier than any of the naff disco sounding cuts on For You. IMO this album is overlooked by Prince fans. It has 2 dodgy songs on it (With you.....just awful, and When We're Dancing, which is still ok). The rest is high quality stuff. This album is just crying out for some horns (and a harmonica on Still Waiting). Its one of the few Prince albums where the synths bring it down. Imagine the revolution crica 1986 getting hold of this material....scary.

Even though Prince is the more polished of the two, I like For You better-- I just love the sound and the scope of this album , from the acapella opening to the closing guitar crunch of I'm Yours... " I've got six things on my mind --you're no longer one of them." - Paddy McAloon, Prefab Sprout
